[personal profile] lordultimus posting in [community profile] scans_daily

So this was requested due to having a similar divergence point to the previous Spider-Man what if that I posted.

This was also something of a historic what if: It was the first to be part of the "alterniverse" imprint, it was supposed to be the start of the new, "darker" What-Ifs (though this story is rather lighthearted overall), and it was the last time of this volume that Uatu was the narrator (though he had been absent in previous issues).

Flash, under the name of the Spider, reveals his true nature when he uses his powers and Peter's equipment to steal diamonds. Peter confronts Flash about it later, only to end up webbed to a building's roof awaiting his grisly plummet when the webs dissolve. However, he manages to use his brains to get himself out of that one, but a decision has to be made.

With a pep talk from his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, Peter resolves to own up to his responsibility in helping to create The Spider and work to bring him down. However, while his skills can help him defeat the gadgets he created for Flash, he still needed help with a device to use against his powers. Enter Dr. Otto Octavius, whose revolutionary mechanical arms are just what Peter needs. At first, Otto is too arrogant to be bothered with Peter until he alerts him to a radiation overload . Grateful to the lad, Otto decides to help him.

A few days later at the Daily Bugle, esteemed publisher J. Jonah Jameson still mourns over the loss of his son, John Jameson, who was killed when his space capsule malfunctioned with no Spider-Man in this world to save him. The Spider crashes in and demands an ad in the paper designed to get more loot turned over to him at one go instead of the way he had been doing it.

However, they are then interrupted by:

Armed with various gizmos and walking on mechanical spider legs, Parker confronts Flash. The two duke it out, powers against brains. Peter ultimately gets the upper hand against the rampaging Spider, using a device to turn Flash's spider-sense against him and knock him out to save Betty Brant and Jonah.

Is that early Immonen art?

Reminds me of his Legion work.

I always thought the shift to darker What If's, especially as many of them seemed to come without a true, real, defined (and expositionally narrated) break-point from mainstream reality was a major downturn in the book. Spider-Girl aside, that is.

I don't particularly mind the darkness, as long as it's done with good reason and a sense of taste; but for me the fun of What Ifs lie precisely in the single point of divergence and unexpected, drastic consequences.

Darker can be done well. The one posted recently where Sue dies and Reed kills Anihilus is a great example of that.

Agree on the rest.

This one I kinda liked, with techno-hero Peter.

Though really, Reed, wasting super powers like that? There's not an unlimited supply of that stuff!

Dick move on Reed's part.
Although knowing him he probably saved them for research and that was just like... water in the syringe.

I really WANT to like the twist ending, because it toys with just making Peter Spider-Man after all and then going, "Nope, that would be dumb!" But the justification for the twist is even dumber. "Here's a super-power serum! You can't have any."

I feel like it would've worked much better if the intents had been reversed.

REED: These powers could still be given to someone else, Peter. Someone with a finely honed sense of responsibility and the courage to solve problems against incredible odds. Someone like--

PETER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, right? Or Nick Fury, I'm sure he could use 'em! Me, I just want to work as your lab assistant-- I mean, this would be like getting to study under Einstein AND Hawking!

REED: Sure, I guess we could work something out.

Yea. Or even if Reed... didn't have the ability to transfer them.

Or if they wanted to you know, test how safe it is to inject a human being with something like that. I mean, for all they know, it might have been something in how Flash got his powers that made him go evil. (ok, we know it didn't, but they don't)

And just pouring it down the drain like that. There's bound to be spider-rats in this alternate's future.

Yeah... considering Pete and Reed's luck and history... that WILL be a thing....

BTW, how is that new Smart girl holding up? As soon as I read she got the title of "Smartest Person in the Marvel Universe" I immediately thought "How will she screw up like every other brilliant scientist that came before her?"

I really like the idea of Peter Parker as one of those old boy-genius science heroes saving the day with gadgets and nerdy pluck. Making Doc Ock basically his science-mentor was a pretty nice touch as well.

I wonder if this one made an impression on Brian Bendis? I seem to recall the "Ultimate Clone Saga" arc ending with Reed offering to take away Peter's powers...

Also, the costume/equipment Peter wears on the interiors is a real letdown compared to the one on the cover. I'd have loved to have at least seen a little flash-forward to *that* Spider-Man fighting alongside the FF.
