In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

Trump... I'd try to keep up with whatever the latest mess turns out to be but I can't type that fast. (Though I will note that the Speaker of the House of Commons in the UK has in a controversial step (since he's supposed to remains impartial) stated that he will not permit Trump to address the Commons on a State Visit) due to his racism and sexism.

The LEGO Batman Movie is probably more ON topic that off, but having been to see it, I thought I'd mention that it's a whole lot of fun, with a near-exhausting stream of non-stop gags. Batman being a complete ass should get tiresome, but it makes it work, especially with Michael Cera's complete optimistic Robin to balance it.

Whilst the majority of Bat-villains who show up are more or less background noise (which is a shame for Billy Dee Williams chance at finally playing Two-Face) the more unexpected villains who show up are a hoot and a half. Also has some of the best scenes of Dick Grayson's impact on Bruce Wayne's life (also some of the outright silliest, but I'm fine with that).

In my favourite headline of the day; LEGOland in Windsor, has discovered a cannabis farm on their property

Last week I played Transformers: Devastation. I beat it three times with three different playable characters, maxed up all their stats and created customized top weapons and equipment for them, got a bunch of SS Ranks (normal difficulty only though, I haven’t been able to get SS on hard, somebody always manages to get at least one punch through and you can’t get SS if you take even 1HP of damage), beat a little over half the Challenge Missions, and got a little over half the Collectibles.

Also got 50% of the achievements. Since I’m an achievements collector, I normally aim to get at least 70% of the achievements in any game I play. But since the remaining achievements are stuff like “completed all chapters, earning the highest rank, on difficulty COMMANDER or greater” and “beat [Boss], on difficulty COMMANDER or greater, without taking any damage,” I went ahahahahahahahahahahahahahNOFUCKYOU and decided 50% is totally fine <3

In total it took me about 30 hours. I had heard that the game “is only 4 hours long,” which leads me to the conclusion that gamers in general really need to stop pushing “speedrun, story-mode only, one character only, without so much as taking a glance around while you rush for the ending” as if it were the normal time it takes to beat a game.

The main criticism I have for the game is that, despite the fact that there are 5 playable characters, they all play in extremely similar ways, so that there is very little variety between different playthroughs. The main differences are that Optimus is a slower but stronger, Bumblebee is faster but weaker, Wheeljack is in the middle and has a shield ability instead of an extra attack ability, etc etc. Minor stuff, which is why I’ve decided to stop at 3: there is just not enough variety to justify going through the game 5 times.

Plus, I really wanted to play as a Decepticon, and I’m disappointed you can only pick Autobots.

Also, the tutorial does a crap job explaining the high-level techniques to you. They tell you all about the basics (even too much, frankly, sometimes it feels like they go "DO THIS THING, IDIOT"). But when it comes to those sweet sweet moves that help you turn the tide of battle, or to tips to best create the most powerful weapons and equipment, online guides and forum discussions do a MUCH better job. They should have at least added some gifs/short videos that show the character pull the move correctly.

That said, the gameplay is solid. It’s like a simpled down, but still very good, version of Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. If you are a fan of hack&slash, I definitely recommend it :D

The story is okay. It's inspired by the G1 cartoon (tone, environments, designs, characterization) and a bit by IDW comics (pre-Optimus Autobots are dicks).

I do wish they had not put in the usual sequel hook, since the chances of there ever being a sequel are zero and it annoys me when they leave plot threads hanging. Supposedly the story of the game is a prequel to the Combiner Wars Hasbro line, but it has absolutely nothing to do with either the IDW continuity nor the web-series cartoon nor the toyline (and in fact even openly contraddicts them. Like, in the web-series, Combiners are this menace that showed up one day to wreak havoc and are tied to the Enigma of Combination, but in the game at least four combiners have been active for some time just because and nobody seems to care, and the ONE Combiner that gets added in the ending that might possibly make a difference never even gets a mention in the cartoon). So I guess by "prequel" they mean "look they all have Combiners more or less so let's just lump them all together 'kay?" Which especially sucks because the satory of the game is much better than the story of the cartoon (and I know that's damning with faint praise, but really, it's a decent story with a solid ending).

With so much going on in politics, let's focus on two minor things. Saturday Night Live really tore into the Trump administration last weekend and in particular, they really took aim at Sean Spicer with having Melissa McCarthy portray him. While Spicer didn't react much to it, Trump seemed rather pissed himself. Not because of Spicer getting humiliated, but because a woman portrayed him in general.

And somewhere, CNN is considering permanently banning Kellyanne Conway from ever appearing on their network because... well she's a liar.

Lastly, let's all take a moment of silence... always forget and never remember the tragic victims of the Bowling Green massacre. Just... it just brings an alternative tear to my eye!

Spicer was a Priebus' pick? Oh, he's toast.

And McCarthy's portrayal of Spicer was excellent. Put me in mind of those aliens that were played by women but meant to look like men in classic Star Trek. The fact that everything to do with women bothers Trump is gravy.

Even though I haven't been able to keep up with Dragon Ball Super (because of the usual "Licensing" curse), I saw some screenshots that Bulma is pregnant with Bra. I'm super happy because I really loved the Vegeta and Bra interactions in GT, they were that (otherwise fairly poor) series' saving grace. I'm so happy she is going to be in Super :D

I'm also greatly amused by an interview with the guy who is writing the Yamcha spin-off manga :)

I'll say upfront that I've always been very fond of Yamcha because, even though he failed to keep up with the other heroes in later seasons, he was really cool in the original season, and I could never let go of my affection for him.

But the guy in the interview said that Yamcha's status as a loser in DB is cemented by both his inability to keep up with the other fighters AND by the fact that he doesn't have a spouse (apparently part of the reason they turned Lunch into Tenshinhan's love interest in the DBZ anime is that Tenshinhan lost major cool points by not having one in the manga. Even Cyborg 17, who has recently returned, got married in Super).

And I'll forever be amused by the fact that the best-selling and most popular manga/anime of all time explicitly has "must be married" as requirement for being taken seriously as a character, whereas Western media is like "nobody could ever possibly relate to a married character that would make them OLD!!!111"

That's a really weird perspective! Though, the way the show treats humans in general really annoys me. There are no real human villains, and the human characters are subservient to the aliens.
Sometimes I think Toriyama wrote himself into a corner with the constant power-ups, because now he's stuck with all these superfluous characters who his writing has rendered utterly impotent.

Considering Yamcha's earlier goals included 'get a girlfriend' iirc, and it's been, what, 20+ years, it is kinda noteworthy.

And, sure, he may be a loser *by the standards of the fighters*, but you'd think that being a hard enough worker to be in the top dozen strongest people on earth would count for something!

The best bit about that Legoland/weed story is this:

"It is thought the building - outside of the park resort but on the theme park's land - was accessed from nearby land owned by the Queen."

Now is that Harry, again, or have we just found out how Her Majesty has managed to put up with Phil for all these years?

I'm not sure what it says about me, but when I read it the bit that I focused on first and which made me angry and grumpy was not the weed, not it being HM's, nor even it being found on Legoland's grounds, but that it was in a derelict cottage. I mean come on, we have a homelessness crisis here in the UK. It is immoral that Legoland should have a derelict cottage at all, they should have reconditioned it nd put it back into use as a home to rent out on social rates. That would be the ethical thing to do. Removing the cannabis farm first or not is something I'd be flexible on.

the opening credits was by far the best part of Powerless, in my opinion

I wasn't much of a fan, personally. There have been some great sitcoms to come out in the last couple years, and even the mediocre ones are better than this. I just expected a little more.

Think the stitches in my nose are finally gone. Yay.
(Sadly though, my sleeping arrangements seem to have buggered up my nose. Can only breath through one side intermittently.
Which was what the whole "surgery" thing was meant tae fix... oy.)

So there's that new Digimon game out, next 0rder ...
Really want to play it, but then that's because Digimon is one of my enduring loves. (Still waiting for Tamers to come out on DVD...)
And got a lot of fondness for the original Digimon World.
Even if the only 'mon I was ever able to breed consistently was Tyrannomon. (Never managed to get a Digimon to Ultimate naturally...)
Actually surprised that Shoutmon's one of the options available.

Also actually kind of intrigued by the Warren Ellis Wildstorm reboot.

Can't wait for him to only write half the story, get bored and wander off, leaving it forever unfinished.
(... sorry, still grouchy about Newuniversal.)

When did everyone become so hateful? Almost everywhere I go on the internet now, people act in mob mentalities, make broad assumptions about others and deal in absolutes (I.E., "If you're not with me, you're my enemy") - and this comes from both 'sides' of the arguments, where not subscribing to the other person's beliefs typically brands you as either an 'oversensitive SJW' or a supporter of Nazi ideologies (seriously, what was so wrong about Nick Spencer's tweet to warrant labeling him as a hack or Nazi?). This isn't even restricted to politics, though (like the Ghostbusters debacle, Gamergate, the reactions to 'Sherlock: The Final Problem', etc.). Again, what's happening?

Bercow is supposed to remain neutral in a party political sense. His job is to safeguard Parliament and it's reputation. He felt that hosting a sexist, racist, who doesn't understand the responsibilities of leadership would not be in Parliament's best interests.

Our Parliament is an instrument of constitutional democracy. If that Parliament feels that the American President is a literal fascist, then it would be foolish to allow him to speak in a democratic setting - if his entire ideology is centred around undermining that democracy.

I was wondering, do you guys know and use any sites to make and organize lists of the comics you've already read? I know there's a collection option on Comicbookdb but it's inconvenient and I tried Goodreads but it's also not very handy (e.g. I can't add comics series there, I have to click every volume of the series). So, any suggestions?

I haven't watched any of "This Is Us" yet, although I understand it is well-written and well-acted. Just a bit melodramatic in the sense every episode wants to be a tearjerker. But NBC renewing it for two more seasons this far in advance...

The last time NBC did something like that for a new show was Aaron Sorkin's "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip." They gave it a full season before the first episode. And "burned off" the last four episodes in May and June of 2007.

Since all HMV music/dvd stores in canada are closing, I went last weekend to see if I could fill a few holes in my DVD collection. Got vol 2 of Batman: the animated series and seasons 3 and 4 of Teen Titans. Also got the bluray of the movie Cleopatra, because it's 4 hours of epicness and Elizabeth Taylor in shiny costumes. Damn that woman was beautiful.
