Hold on, let me get my gallon of Jaegermeister...

Okay, there's no clear divergence point to this one, and there are multiple differences that you'll see over the next few days as I post these. Judging by solicits, it was meant to be "What if Hope Summers fell under Magneto's influence", but... well, let's just say I have my own ideas.

" Magneto.. what have you done? "
" Made a destructively unilateral gesture because of how I feel about things. "
" It's what you do. "
" It is. "

Oh this comic... read some of it a while back. It's like the Ultimatum of What If comics. Be very afraid.

And AGAIN no one is saying "It has to be Hope's decision."

Does anyone one this board think that would somehow work? Scott says "Hope can go with you if, AND ONLY IF, she decides to."

I admit that I wouldn't trust Magneto to let someone "make their own decision". He has a history of manipulating events so that people make the decisions he wants them to, or simply making sure they are forced to do what he wants anyway.

Stuff like this is why I can't take the X-men as heroes seriously.

Well, Storm says it as she dies, if that's any consolation.

It drives me crazy that the Avenger's response to Wolverine clearly wanting to kill somebody against Captain America's wishes is pretty much "no stahp :("

Hey, I have an idea. Howabout you tell him to either fall in line, or get the fuck off the team. And if he acts out further you pump him full of tranqs and stick him in a cell until his boner subsides. This is a borderline paramilitary legally sanctioned superhero team, not some fucking middle school dungeons and dragons club. It's your prerogative to make sure your members do what you fucking tell them to do.

Oh, and look what happens when you let Wolvie wave his claws around like an idiot. GEE WHAT A SURPRISE.

why do people EVER ask the guy who has knives in his hands ALL THE TIME (and one of the highest bodycounts in the marvel universe) for advice? a man who constantly goes after the wife/girlfriend of someone he says is his friend.

ok so MAYBE asking Wolverine what he would do, isn't a terrible idea, so long as you are going to do the opposite.

Wolverine actually has a long history of doing the right thing. He's another of those characters who has been stereotyped and glorified at his worst rather than his best

"Plus Emma and I have years of experience mentoring young mutants, whereas Magneto only trying being headmaster for the New Mutants once, and that went very poorly. Seeing how we'd clearly be better at teaching Hope, and how the entire future of our of species rests on her shoulders, I have to wonder... if there's any of that French Vanilla creamer left."

Gee, if only there were some Mutant with some kind of ability to, I dunno, HEAL people.
But of course, no such Mutant exists, so naturally the first victim is the bi black woman.

"Just hold on, Ororo, we'll get Elixir, or put you in suspended animation, or - or something!"
"Wait... is this a choice between staying in this comic or dying?"
"... um... yes?"
"Oh, okay then. BLEG!"

Dont need to get Elixir, Hope is right there and can grab his powers.

Doesn't she need proximity? If Elixir isn't nearby she can't heal using his abilities.

Hang on, does she basically have the same powerset as the dear departed Synch of Gen X?

From: [personal profile] jlbarnett
she also had some ability to jump start powers and I'm not sure she needed real cloe proximity like Synch

More like Mimic, really.
(Only more powerful and less pleasant. And without the "only five at a time" rule. But it does require proximity, according to the Old Father's Wikipedia.)

Of course, this assumes Hope will actually do something useful.

Do you really think the specifically killed Storm off because she is a 'bi black woman'? Or would it be because her death would have the "most impact" in this shitty story because OH NOES DRAMA it's Wolverine who accidentally killed her but sometimes maybe they love each other what will he ever do?

Didn't this start with Cyclops musing that he hadn't quite clicked with Captain America, so he sent Magneto and Namor to negotiate a peaceful solution instead?

It just... gek.

Cyclops was probably too busy choking with laughter to realise that Mags was serious about sending Namor, and by the time he recovered, they'd already left.

Poor Cyclops. He hasn't even become Dark Phoenix or destroyed a peanut cloud yet, and already he's less trustworthy than two guys who treat the Heel–Face Revolving Door like it's a carnival ride.

God forbid he just send Storm, who is calm, diplomatic, and was literally just an Avenger.

To be fair, Cap is more likely to mellow Namor out than anything. Cap's one of the few people Namor respects.

Yes, just leaving Namor and Cap in a room with some tea to talk it over might have worked out quite well. Namor on the opposite side of Logan and Magneto as a negotiator... well.

He did his best with the New Mutants back in the day, he really did, but then Secret Wars II happened, and it all went pear-shaped from there.

In fairness, some of the New Mutants have issues beyond the fevered dreams of any psychologist.

Most would probably try to drown themselves in booze after five minutes with Rhane...

Rahne has some religiously induced self loathing and self image issues, but that's a walk in the park compared to "canonically and empirically 3/5 evil and actual queen of a hell dimension".

In general they're a healthy enough bunch with Rahne, Ilyanna and Doug (chronic inferiority complex) about the only standouts.

Compare to say, the New Teen Titans where we had Daddy issues (Robin), Evil sister sold me into slavery (Starfire), self loathing body issues (Cyborg), something like three cases of survivor guilt in one person (Changeling), father is ACTUAL WARLORD DEMON KING (Raven) and substance abuse issues (Speedy).

I think it predates her tenure, though she didn't help in that regard.

Secret Wars II had the New Mutants killed and then resurrected by the Beyonder and they had to deal with the psychological impact of having been murdered and restored on a whim.

Prof X might have been better able to do something about that, but as it was Magneto eventually had to go to still active supervillain Emma Frost who, in the middle of a complicated plot with Empath being even more of a dick than usual) to her credit, DID eventually help them, but only after first trying to get them to come over to her side. Part of the reason she ended up helping was the realisation that them being dead inside made them more a liability than an asset.

Between that, the Great Mutant Massacre, the being lost in time for several issues, the brief cameo by Prof X being in super-Dad mode before sending them home again, and then Fall of the Mutants leaving one of the team actively dead, Mags never stood a chance.

A freeze frame over laughing Avengers and X-Men whilst the credit roles by page five wouldn't really sell as many comics.

ok, yeah.

maybe just 2 pages at the end of one of the others, with Uatu saying "but in the Universe where things made sense, the Phoenix rejoined Rachel (or she volunteered to train Hope because, well, experience) and all was well. until the next big Event."

I was never sure why Hope was assumed to be a likely Phoenix host, we know that the Phoenix seems to have a thing for the Grey/Summers genetic line, but Hope wasn't genetically part of the family.
