FANGORIA: Grant Morrison is actually fond of comparing superheroes to the ancient gods, arguing that they fulfil a similar mythological need in our modern psyche. Is it this sort of deification that bothers you? Should we have moved past myths and gods by now?

PAT MILLS: Yeah, I think the deification of superheroes is rather worrying. The neo-Christian elements, e.g . Messiah Syndrome, have been written about before, although not in a critical way to my knowledge. Abdicating our power to messiahs is a dangerous business.

This does show Marshal Law isn't totally heartless or hates everyone super-powered. And not everyone with powers from "The Zone" is a violent monster.

It feels there could have been decent art and decent story underneath the pet peeves of the creator.

But how can you compare ancient mythology to deification? Study of actual worship of ancient gods shows that it was pretty similar to modern religion. The myths, the stories, were degradation of awe-inspiring forces of nature. It was a way of lessening the fear-of-god, of controlling reality into neat little anthropomorphic entities. Not limited to gods, analyzing a problem and breaking it apart into bite-size chunks works for any number of things.
