When Gavok of 4th talked about What Ifs he suggested that a common thread of what ifs is (Aside from Spidey dying all the time) that if Reed loses Sue, he becomes unstable/a total ass.

Exhibit A right here.

Vol. 2 actually redid this topic. Technically, it was "What If Namor Joined the FF", but same difference: Namor and Sue end up together. But there, instead of going super-villain, Reed threw himself into SCIENCE, eventually leaving the FF to do science full time.

There was also a subplot about Reed's lab assistant-with-a-crush (who turned out to be a spy for Doom).

It's one of my favorite What If stories, actually.

So, uh. What happened to Spider-Man?
Seems kind of odd that for a sequel to Spidey joining the FF, he immediately gets written out.

Not going to comment on Sue's role in the story, so instead... she sounds incredibly florid throughout this.
Maybe because of all the time spent around Namor?

I suspect they wanted to stick to the standard Done-In-One format of What If as closely as possible. Leave out Spider-Man, and you wouldn't even be able to tell it's a sequel.

Come on, Reed. You just need to get back out there. Sure, Sue was great, but everyone thought the whole thing about her being 13 and having a crush on you while you were in college was pretty creepy.

My point is, you're a rich genius celebrity with the power to lengthen any part of body. So just start dating again. There are plenty of fish in the... okay, bad phrase.

One thing I always found funny was how this was the first of two sequels to the very first issue and both are completely incompatible with each other. Meaning we've been shown two divergent time lines form one what if.

Wow Reed what a dick you have to be to try to "rescue" a woman in the middle of f-ing childbirth

Man, Reed & Johnny really don't come off looking good here at all...Like the Atlanteans seem surprisingly chill with having Sue as their queen given how they're all normally written as being so anti-surface dweller, whereas Reed & Johnny are really less upset about Sue going her own way and more that she's hooked up with one a dem dirty fish people o_O

An interesting experiment would be to rewrite a lot of early FF stories with current Sue in place of passive victim Sue actually and see how things turn out...."WHAT IF...Sue Storm had anything resembling personal agency? Excelsior!"

I couldn't speak to specific continuity changes with that third issue, but it has the Fantastic Five reunited, Sue and Reed are back together, and Sue's pregnant with Reed's baby. Even The Watcher is surprised when he finds out that it's supposed to follow from this story.

IIRC the Watcher and editors note only reference issue 1 not this issue. The fact Peter's quitting and Namor and Sue's child isn't mentioned make it very hard to reconcile that issue with this one. I always got the impression that the writers of that what if simply forgot about this issue happening in Volume one when they decided to do a sequal visit tothe first what if as part of Time Quake.

Enh. You can always imagine Sue breaking up with Namor and going back to Reed. Probably have to kill Namor's kid to make everything line up.

I know it's been posted before, but not, I think, in this spate of what-if posts, but I always loved the "Spider-man marriage double-waht if" issue.

As I recall, there was also another sequel to this, only in that one, Sue returned to Reed not too long after going off with Namor.

It ended with Doom killing Annihilus.
