Entertainment Weekly: What made you decide to take her out of her Hulk form and show her human side?

Mariko Tamaki: When I was originally contacted by Marvel with this project, that was the way that they saw this starting. I really liked the idea of having somebody who has been comfortable in their skin, suddenly not [be]. Especially someone who’s been through a traumatic thing. All these things you take for granted about yourself mentally and physically that are no longer true. So I thought it was a really great starting point for a story about trauma, to put her in this position of literally holding this really big thing which is this thing that she is.

Editor Mark Paniccia: The other thing, too, is this is one of the results of Civil War II. These are all really heavy things that we wanted to explore in this character who’s been this fan-favorite superhero who’s going through this terrible trauma and tragedy. Part of Marvel’s stories are that world outside your window. There’s a lot of people that deal with this on a daily basis, and that’s all part of the human condition and in Marvel, the human condition is part of the superhuman condition.

So picking up from last issue, Jennifer Walters is trying to stay anger free as best as she can. She meet with Miss Brewn's landlord, aka your stereotypical sleazebag of a human being. However, after getting some coffee and relaxing on a bench in a snowy park after the meeting...

hulk0201

hulk0202

(Truly, Hawkeye and Captain Marvel had done good here by killing Bruce and saying his death was necessary.)

hulk0203

hulk0204

Meanwhile, due to her problems, she is unable to take a call from Brewn, who is scared that her landlord will toss her out on the street. So she asks the mysterious, unseen dark force to protect her.

Later that day...

hulk0205

hulk0206

hulk0207

Am I being followed?

hulk0208

(I spy with my little eye a Hellcat spying on her bestie.)

And so the comic closes out with Brewn's landlord getting squashed by a bug by... if I'm judging the silhouette of his attacker correctly, Dog from Half-Life 2.

I hope a character will say to Jen "I remember when you were fun! You wore leg-warmers and drove a flying Cadilac!"

You're implying she's not fun now. Her relationship with her assistant is pretty fun.

Well it *is* a Jennifer Walters book. Those tend to run shorter than longer.

Based on the narrative thread, which is very waiting-for-the-trade, it seems likely this is intended to cap at 12 issues, or 6, not unlike Karnak.

Says the guy that's not even reading the book.

Both the art and the writting are great. Plus, it's not like her previous book did all that well. Which i loved, but they clearly needed a new approach for a new book.

MU civilians don't think Banner was transformed when Clint shot him, right? Because Hawkeye didn't kill a giant rage monster, he killed a skinny guy with glasses. You'd think that would make a difference.

Not to Marvel citizens it don't.

irrelevant. There is only Hulk and Hulk version that is small, skinny and has glasses. thus the end result in killing either is Hulk being dead.

...Old Man Logan. Plus, Hulk has supposedly killed lots of people & destroyed lots of neighborhoods. Yeah, its cool he & the Avengers saved the world a lot but Hulk/Banner was a violent, destructive jerk.

I stand by what I say: Bruce Banner is a poop.

I'm a little torn here. I like the ideas at play. I like the way that most of the series so far has been about the struggle with anger and trauma instead of the latest external threat or just turning Jen into a full-fledged threat herself. Those kids are playing the most thematically convenient game of cowboys and Indians imaginable, but even so, a lot of this is strong material...

But there's no way around the fact that it feels like a giant step backward for the character. Making She-Hulk into "just Hulk with boobs" has seemed to be the first and last resort for scriptwriters who don't have any interest in or facility with a smart, sassy green Amazon. It's not generally done with this level of nuance or talent, but then and now, it feels like superhero comics' old habits of punishing characters who are (1) women and (2) too fun.

I'm hoping nobody gets the bright idea to give Squirrel Girl or Ms. Marvel this kind of treatment in twenty years.

Having read the book, i can safely tell you that's not true. It's not "Hulk with boobs", it's also not a step backwards since Jen never had to deal with trauma like this before, even going to the previous times she couldn't control her She-Hulk form.

Marvel: Let's make a new She-Hulk series, but take away everything people like about She-Hulk.

DC: Here's a book where the Justice League team up with the Power Rangers.

I don't blame Marvel with going with this direction with Jen. You can't make a She-Hulk series without addressing her mourning bruce's death or you have fans complaining that she doesn't seem to care that Bruce died.
What i DO blame Marvel for is killing bruce in the first place because that remains bad writing

I'm thinkin' rather that Marvel are probably trying to appeal to the near-mythical 'new reader' with this series. So, taking what the general public know about the Hulk and applying it to a female character, rather than building on the already-existing traits of She-Hulk.

It's like the flipside of the movies a couple years ago:

WB/DC - We just are having a really hard time adapting all the fantastic elements of Wonder Woman to the big screen.

Marvel - Here's a Raccoon with a machine gun!

If there was ever a time for Jen to face towards the fourth wall and start yelling at the creative team, this would be it.

It's the first time she has actually had a female writer, so i doubt she'd have a problem with the creative team.

I also doubt Jen would have a problem with trauma being written realistically and rather respectfully.

It's like you don't even know Jen. She'd be happy that they haven't dobe any fan service this time.

Besides, Jen hasn't broken the fourth wall in decades.

I'm used to having a different opinion to most scans_daily, so hinestly don't give a fuck I'll probabpy be looked down upon for saying I'm liking this quite a lot. This is some nice character work ij here with gorgeous art.

It's okay to do something different with a character once in a while and this isn't going to be Jen's staus quo forever.

I agree, I get why people are unhappy about the dark tone, but it makes sense given that her cousin dies, and it feels well-written and not forced.
