Yeah, but it sticks out occasionally, Elsa is obviously traced from That One Woman he always traces stuff off, and I've seen Kamala's shouting face too in other comics he's traced.

I'm going to go with: any closeup where the lady's mouth is open.

Oh, I have no idea if it's from porn or not, it's just faces and facial epxressions I recognize from other Land comics.

Yes, I agree. That face he uses is distinctive. I guess I consider it a step up that it doesn't actively look pornographic? I mean, as opposed to Green Lantern Jessica Cruz. :(

I kinda feel like this is a missed opportunity, as Wade isn't singing the vagina dentata song while fighting that one monster.

Now she looks like a bored college-age camgirl.
Knowing Land, of course...

Say it with us again. "Little girl." "9-year-old."

I shudder to think what photo references Land would resort to if his editors demanded he make little girls look their actual ages.

So, Devil Dinosaur girl, RiRi Williams, purple haired girl in faux Iron Man Armor in that Avengers title, Amadeus Cho, and Hank Pym's daughter/the new Wasp. Have I missed any young super geniuses wandering around the MU these days? Could this influx of sooooooooper geniuses be due to fewer writers writing numerous titles? Just curious.

Amadeus Cho has been running around for 12 years now, so I'm not sure I'd count him on this list.

Is it a problem that we have a bunch of super-geniuses running around? The MU was founded on's just that in 1962, they were all white guys. Reed Richards, Hank Pym, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner and even Peter Parker...all science geniuses. And it's not like there aren't plenty of other recent characters who aren't. Ms. Marvel, Nova (Sam), Viv Vision and others don't fall in that category.

To me, it seems like they're just making up a shortfall...and the fact that super-geniuses is a comic book trope for making a quick explanation of how you get from zero to superhero.

Valid point regarding Cho. It just seems like the sudden influx of characters with a similar set of abilities just makes them seem less special, that's all. It also feels like lazy writing. For example, the purple haired girl in Avengers might have been more interesting if she was just rich and had a team of top flight engineers making her a hero. Instead she just seems like an Asian RiRi Williams, or RiRi is an afro-American version of her.

And at least when you looked at those white guys they had, you know, college educations and age and experience. Making a nine year old girl a super genius with a hidden lab in her school just feels, well, stupid. And I'm not much impressed with the new Wasp, either. At least where Amadeus Cho was concerned his genius was the product of a mutant gene where eating sugar and fatty food enhanced his intellect so it explained why someone so young was so inhumanly smart.

kore: (Janet van Dyne (Wasp))
From: [personal profile] kore
Toni Ho ("purple haired girl") is Yinsen's daughter, she went to Caltech and got three doctorates (I know, but she's supposed to be like Tony). She was born sometime in the eighties, so she might be in her late twenties. Riri is fifteen or sixteen and is from a very poor background which isn't challenging her enough. Nadia Pym is Hank's daughter and was trained in the Red Room, and her handlers saw she had an aptitude for science, and Mark Waid went all the way back to 1966 for her mother. She's lived either in isolation or hiding all her life.

Those are all fairly different backgrounds, and they're pretty different personalities, although Nadia reminds me some of Squirrel Girl, who's been around since the mid-00s (and was first invented in 1992). Waid said "Tom Brevoort and I both have a great love for the original Wasp, Janet van Dyne, and in the wake of the Ant-Man movie (which was great), Tom suggested there might be something to introducing someone who was a nod to that film’s Hope van Dyne without in any way minimizing Janet’s role in the Marvel Universe." And Nadia means Hope, so it's not so much fewer writers doing more books, but Brevoort wanted to tie it in some with the MCU.

Thanks for the background. So Toni Ho is just a female version of Tony Stark? Highly intelligent rich person who builds a suit of armor that looks like Super Patriot? I'm not sure if that makes her any better or worse than my original assertion. Althought it's nice that she's at least an adult unlike the others.

RiRi's background does make her less realistic, seeing as it appears she was brought up in a public school system and she somehow is a soooper genius without access to teachers or text books that would give her the knowledge to make her an even better Iron Man than Tony Stark himself. And she's so incredibly brave, like she was raised from birth by Cable or something. Armorless, she's surrounded by technoninjas and she doesn't sweat it. Whatever. She's already a super hero right out of the gate who pwns ninjas.

Points to Nadia being trained, I'll give you that. Noticed you didn't even want to touch Moon Girl, though. Guess the nine year old with a secret lab under her grade school is too much for anybody to try and explain.

And of course I forgot Hickman's class of super geniuses, led by the Richards' ultra mega intelligent daughter.

He's not who I would have thought of for a monster comic. Maybe Frank Cho was too busy?

Still, he did a good job with all the Kirby critters, so it worked out.

Why is Carol's Hala star glowing on the cover? Is that a thing now? I read a lot of Captain Marvel, and it seems odd to me.

Hey, Springfield, Mo.! I know people there! It's OK if it gets monster-stomped, though.
