I liked this one a lot when I read it when I was younger, now I really wonder about the premise. Even with super-powers and added vampiric abilities, the overall success rate of the Undeaddy X-Men seems high (and where was Warlock when they took out the New Mutants? Or was he not around yet?)

And then there's the Vision on the list of "true dead." He's a solar-powered android with intangibility. He should practically be the most dangerous weapon on Earth against vampires. They must have taken him completely by surprise.

That said, Castle wearing the Cloak of Levitation is an amazing visual.

I'm surprised by how well the pairing of Doctor Strange and the Punisher works together, first in Original Sin, then again in Secret Wars and now here.

The surprise factor should work wonders at first- Nightcrawler caught Magneto off guard, and once they have Magneto, well, the heavy hitter ratio begins to shift and taking on the likes of Vision isn't too hard. Kitty's really good for ambushes too.

Also strikes me that 'Curse of the Mutant' has the vampires trying a similar plot. Get the mutants, and a whole lot of vampmutants is a really hard force to stop.

The surprise factor is a fair point, I'll give you that one.

Wasn't that how it goes down in Marvel Zombies?

Infect the superpowered people first & the whole world is undead within a couple of days.

Yea. MZs spread faster than vampires, so this one would take a lot longer, though flipside the vampires are smarter so the turned scientists will still do science.

This story is based off X-Men 159 from July 82.

The five founding New Mutants had already appeared in their debut Graphic Novel, but wouldn't get their own series until March 83 and warlock wouldn't join until November 84.

Magneto being on side would probably be of help against Vision.

Frog Man. It was important to Logan that Frog Man stay dead.

On the subject of people who should have been the most dangerous weapons against vampires, the cover features Jean Grey in full Phoenix costume--the cosmic bird of fire and life taken down by some undead meatsack? Surely not!

I remember this story marking the beginning of my lifelong pattern of "one wonky detail pulling me out of the story." In this case it's a scene not shown here: Dracula biting down on Colossus' neck.

His still fully-transformed metal neck.

Just no.

I did like that they made sure to mention that they got the drop on Magneto, rather than have him just go down like everyone else.

Reminds me of how in the Utopia-era vampire story (the one where Jubilee got turned), the X-men made a front line entirely of unturnable people. Colossus, Emma, Rockslide, Bling, etc..

I love the randomness of who gets to be turned into a vampire.
Mole Man... yes.
Frog-Man... no.

If you think about it, Mole Man makes sense. He can provide them with protection during the day

It doesn't seem too random to me. I mean for those getting turned into Vampires its guys who are powerful or Wolverine knows and respects (Hulk, Spidey, Fury) and Villains who would be cool with being vampires. For those killed it would be those with biology weird enough they may be immune (Thing), those with no chance of being affected (Vision) beings too powerful (Namor and Doom) or beings not powerful enough (Hawkeye, Frog Man).

And it looks like Quasar is on the list presumably because his power is manipulating photons, which could easily be modulated to the wavelengths of sunlight.

I am horribly amused at the idea of Dr. Strange bestowing such power on The Punisher. In terms of bad ideas, it's pretty high up there.

Yeah. Come to think of it, wouldn't it be impossible for Castle to use the Eye of Agamotto even under Strange's guidance? When he pulled a similar possession trick with Morgana Blessing it wouldn't work for her due to lack of spiritual purity. I think if a flirty journalist falls short, a murder-happy vigilante who never met a crook he wouldn't gun down would too.

Interesting ethical question, sort of mirroring a discussion I was having about the Punisher on another forum yesterday.

His spirit is pure, from (as a certain Jedi put it) a certain point of view. He's never denied his actions, even to himself, he is always entirely open and honest about his mission and his intentions. He's a killer certainly but has never preteneded to be anything else.

What he's not is GOOD, but I'm not sure the Eye cares about that part of your alignment.

This one always bugged me if only due to the "heroic willpower" angle.

If Logan can just shrug off being a vampire thrall, Storm should've beaten him to it.

I always thought Lohan would make a terrible Vampire (or Hulk, which also happened once)

I can't see how his adamantium bones can transform. Attempting any sort of transformation should be agonizing and gory. Also, most mutant powers seem to require some biological activity to function. But Wolverines powers especially, since they are just accelerated biological function.

Incidentally, I wonder if something like Colossus transformation could reasonably shed or supress the vampiric condition?
