"The fun for me is seeing these characters, who are very grounded and very realistic kids, and then have these insane things starting to happen, and then having them be able to react to it the way maybe a normal teenager would, as opposed to a teenager who's grown up in 50 years of superheroes flying around them." - Jeff Lemire

I forgot how much I enjoyed this. Did they ever even announce volume 2? For any of this line?

I honestly do not know how they slipped under my radar. Will have to get it now. Thanks!

You children are being ridiculous? What about your soldiers! They're picking fights mid recruitment speech.

I'm sure I'd like this a lot more if I hadn't seen about a dozen stories along the same lines in the YA part of the bookstore, and if it didn't also remind me of Gen13 and Troublemakers and even the '90s iteration of Teen Titans.

It just has far too many of those over-used elements. Parents who aren't what they seem? Check. Unethical scientists who use children as guinea pigs? Check. All the science is derived from an alien they keep locked away? Check and checkity-check. Kids go on the run after their "parents'" evil scheme is revealed? Oh yeah.

Jeff Lemire has always run cold for me; I feel like I should appreciate his work more, and yet it always seems to lack something.

I've had the same reaction to Lemire, actually. His work is serviceable, but always seems to miss a certain spark. Even Plutona felt a bit rote.

Slade Wilson is a retired, noticeably older man in a setting where superhero genre stuff isn't normalized- yup.

Slade Wilson has a bloody past- fair.

Slade Wilson is willingly called Deathstroke by other people- OK. Sure. Whatever.

Nicknames are common in military service, Deathstroke might have been his.

My nickname 'Electric Pussycat' never did get much traction outside my unit.

Okay, I'm kidding. That IS the nickname for my unit. http://www.militaryuniformsupply.com/files/35th-signal-brigade-csib.gif

it's to derivative, and frankly the Teen Titans outside of a genre where this stuff is normalized just makes no sense to me

Not too sure about the shared origin kids-as-genetic-experiments premise, but I think I like this version of Raven better than the original (and I was a big fan of the character in the 80s).

while I didn't like what they did with Joey, I did REALLY love this take on the team. (also were Gar's parents gay?)
