The comic book tie-in to the 90s X-Men animated series outlasted the animated series itself, at least for a while, telling series set after the final episode.

Eventually, though, sales dictated that the comic needed to end too. When that happened, the creative team decided to put the final bow on this universe in a very unexpected fashion. As you'll see, things got a little crazy.

I'm extremely confused. Could anybody please give me a very simpled-down summary of the above?

Also, this is a perfect explanation of why superhero cartoons and movies have dozens or even hundreds of millions of viewers, while superhero comics struggle to reach thousands.

You'd think comic book writers would learn to hold back on convoluted as hell messes that make Kingdom Hearts really come across as simple and clean, but see what they recently did to Kon...

Thank you.

This is what has kept me out of reading most mainstream comics recently. I leave for a period of time, then come back and find continuity lock-out. Then I read summaries, and get even more confused. For example, I've always thought it was counterproductive for comics companies to have multiple iterations of a character to be running around all at once.

Also just caught what you did with Kingdom Hearts being "simple and clean." Lol

The universe that precedded the 616 Marvel Universe and, in turn, created Galactus was the 90's X-men cartoon.

...So basically everybody in the 90's X-men cartoon universe died?

So this was the 6th iteration of the Marvel Universe, to be followed by the 7th which has now been replaced by the 8th? o.0

Might have been replaced by the 8th.
Key word is "might".

And hey, it beats the 5th Cosmos. The fifth cosmos sucked.
(Unless you're the sort of person who goes in for squamous, undulating horrors that roil the foam we mere zygotes of existence foolishly call reality.)

I think it's basically like that Douglas Adams/Terry Pratchett joke where the universe already ended and came back to life. Again. I think the Marvel universe has ended and come back like eight or nine times. That we know of.

I liked the reference to the Marvel/DC crossover (ie: the two brothers)!

Though it seems a bit petty on behalf of the writer to have the Tribunal suddenly using the Brothers like pawns, given that he was barely able to hold back one of their swords back in the crossover.

More like the Overcompensating Tribunal, amirite...

Marvel/DC? I thought the two brothers was a reference to Chaos and Order. Swear that symbolism predated Busiek's crossover.

The " transdimensional consultation with his hooded, spectral ally ", though.

Mmmmaybe. But Living Tribunal has three faces. It is a trinity of various hoody people. Equity, Vengeance, and...something.

The image of the brothers is pretty definitive, though.

Never read that to my recollection. Its interesting, but odd that Busiek never referenced it in JLA/Avengers. Also, maybe its me but...only two? Sure the Big Two were the main survivors, but they were never the only ones.

You didn't miss much. There were some nice moments between/involving Batman and Captain America, but the rest of that crossover was dross.

Well if you have to end your comic, might as well take the Universe with it!

After reading Ultimates and Ultimates2 for a while, this actually kindasorta makes sense, which is mildly alarming.

Eternal recursion! how very Nietzschian.
