-"And your reality might be next"-
... you know what? Bring it on.
Evil creepy rape snake-gods can't really be any worse than what we've got now.

(That last page is... very disturbing. On several levels. The whole thing is disturbing, but the giant snakes eating the snake people who aren't even trying to fight back... including freaking She-Hulk...
Gaah... must watch something saccharine quick...)

Quick bring on the Alan Davis New Mutants!, or Batman

My go-to comic book reading equivalent of comfort food.

Either that or Batman and Sons

I find Astro City works pretty well.

(Or something written by Ewing. Mighty Defenders works pretty well in that regard.)

Either that or The Brave and The Bold.

"Astro City" is ALWAYS a good choice.

Brave and the Bold, in fact pretty much anything by Sholly Fisch is a good move too.

In addition, I would suggest Younger Days on DevArt. Think Peanuts with 100% less Chew Toy main character and 1000% more "D'AAAAAW!"

That big composite Quasar moment at the end goes some way to mitigating the " everything and everyone is (well-depictedly) dying and burning and suffering because a What If means we can really break toys that look like the ones we can't break as much " before it.

(The Sons of Set thing's just a dangling plot hook. There were some fics that picked up on it- each of the kids had their mother's powers, because of course.)

One of the first comics I can remember buying, so it holds quite a bit of sentiment for me. Plus, there's some really cool action sequences in this.

I'm getting so sick of Wolverine's thing for Jean Grey. It gets more disgusting every What If where he claims some right to her.

Wolverine's thing for Jean Grey is, was and always has been utterly creepy, right from the word "go".

Fun fact: The first time it ever came up, Wolverine brings out a picture of Jean Grey and starts going on about her (he thought she was dead, long story involving a volcano base and Magneto), all but outright saying he wanted to sleep with her before he gets cut off, which'd be bad enough (even without factoring in Logan could only have stolen that photo from someone else, because Jean sure as hell didn't give it to him)...

And the last time Jean and Wolverine had interacted in any meaningful fashion, it had been her saying she didn't like him, and found him disgusting.
(Well, that or Logan hitting her to get her free of Mesmero's brainwashing, while claiming they were "similar" because... uh... because?)

Romance for the ages(!)

given the time frame this was set in and the fact Jean isn't the sort to find people, at least decent people, disgusting this was likely meant as "protesting to much"

the similar stuff was likely to mean they were both passionate people who had to repress things. Jean may have become the mom friend of the X-men but Claremont doesn't do mom friends, at least not female ones. There's passionate people who express themselves and passionate people who repress themselves

Been forever since I've read this issue. Totally forgot how violent it was.

Also I think I could have happily gone the rest of my life without seeing the inside-out serpent crown/Set creature again. Straight up nightmare fuel. Blech...

Ah yes. This one. How do you turn Warlock into a snake-monster again?

It feels a little like cheating when What Ifs need multiple pivot points in order to work. This one had three, with Namor's death, Punisher and Moon Knight's defeat, and Thor's failure.

Doom's voice feels off. "As it does us all, my young friend?" That just doesn't sound like Doom under any circumstance.

Trapped for eternity battling a serpent monster! Fuel for losing one's mind there, just like Lazarus in Star Trek stuck the same way.

I know that What If?s are first and foremost imaginary stories, like it says on the tin. But the pedant in me always objected to this one, because the in-setting premise was of them happening in alternate timelines observed by the Watcher.

Set had previously been established as a singular entity who dwells in the Astral Plane or his own nether dimension and interacts with multiple parallel earths (which presumably only started diverging after he and his surviving siblings fled the physical universe). There shouldn't be an alternate Set to invade a different earth and have events play out as they do here rather than as they did on Earth 616.

For that matter, I think this book came out at around the same time as the "Cross-Time Caper" arc in Excalibur, where a major plot element was the fact that Rachel Summers doesn't have any alternate-universe equivalents.

There are a handful of stories in early-'90s/late-'80s Marvel that struck me at the time as other writers being slightly petty about the sales dominance of the X-books, and this What If is one of them.

Really, I think you can go back even further than that. Look at the overall short end of the stick the X-Men get during the original Secret Wars, for example.

I've always held a grudge against the What Ifs that were less "for want of a nail" scenarios and more "What if everything the bad guys needed to win happened?"
