In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

And... we're through the freaking looking glass people...

Following last weeks decision by the White House to bar certain news organisations from Press briefings (Out: The Guardian, The New York Times, Politico, CNN, BuzzFeed, the BBC and truly bizarrely, The Daily Mail (The sort of Right-wing xenophobic rag you'd have thought would have been just up their alley) In - Breitbart News, the One America News Network, The Washington Times, CBS, NBC, Fox and ABC... Yes, THAT Fox News, the ones who, last week, made up out of whole cloth a "Swedish National Defence and Security Advisor" who... wasn't), we have to turn to that universally regarded voice of sweet reason and logic, George W Bush, who has come out in defence of an independent media
"We need an independent media to hold people like me to account."

In a similar topsy-turvy move former UK PM's Tony Blair and John Major have clarified their issues with the UK's approach to Brexit. Blair wants a second vote before the leaving is final, and Major wants to see less rhetoric and just a little more charm to Theresa May's bulldozer in a china shop approach.

Oh and one final piece from Trumpland, apparently the US military problem is that "we don’t win wars any more" as he is set to boost military spending by $54 billion.  (No you wretched tangerine fartbag, your primary aim should be to avoid, wherever possible, having wars in the first place!)

On a lighter note, confusion at the Oscar's has had a humungous amount of media coverage probably because it was something very public, very embarrassing, ultimately harmless and had nothing to do with the White House.

I have to give credit where it's due that there was no sulking or pouting, and Jordan Horowitz handed off the Oscar he’d just been told was his to Barry Jenkins personally and proudly, which can’t have been an easy thing to do, but was absolutely the RIGHT thing to do.

And, of course, the fact that Moonlight won is something to celebrate in it's own right, as it's the story of a black, queer man and his life (though that's selling it rather short as a description).

And Doctor Who got a new trailer for Season 10. In true new companion style, we see an assessment of the Doctor from the POV of Bill, and hints at, amongst other things, our first female Ice Warrior (or Lady Ice Lord... or Ice Lady... or something)

Oh, and on behalf of a friend, who has asked for everyone to pass this message on due to personal reasons; Tell your loved ones you love them. Do it as soon as you can, today if possible, because you never know when you might not get the chance to tell them again.

AHH MOONLIGHT <3

I finally saw it tonight, I love it so much - everything about it was so lovingly created. I nearly cried 3 times and I am probably gonna go see it tomorrow again :)

I finished watching Free! Eternal Summer, second and final season of Free! aka The Swimming anime.

I really enjoyed it. I love how... human it is. Despite the fact that the characters are flashy and over-the-top, they nevertheless have very realistic anxieties and reactions.

I especially love how they portray Rin's depression. Normally the depressed character is the shut-in who needs to go out and see the world to get better. I think Rin is the very first, and so far only, case I've seen of a character who starts out cheerful and becomes depressed because he went out and saw the world. And not because The World Is CruelTM either, they make it a point to show that his environment was supportive and kind, it's just that he couldn't fit. They completely turned expectations on their head, and did so in a way that felt very natural.

I also love how they completely demolished the typical Training From Hell trope as the bullshit it is. The character who pushes himself over the limit doesn't become the strongest, he gradually damages his body until he is unable to compete anymore and is forced to give up his dream. They explicitly push the message of TRAIN RESPONSIBLY, which is incredibly refreshing in a sports anime.

And I love how they develop the friendship of the main characters in a very natural, organic way.

My only complaint is that, while there is an effton of subtext, it only ever remains subtext. They hint and wink and nudge, and the ending is open enough to reasonably leave it up to interpretation, but Rin/Haru never becomes canon in the show.

I understand that this is the way it always is in any anime that are not explicitly marketed as shounen-ai/yaoi (Yuri On Ice being the one and only exception to the rule. And even then, the creator had to fight tooth and nail for it, couldn't show anything explicit to the point that even the kiss was more hinted than shown, and it was probably only allowed because the protagonists are 23 and 27 years old). But still... :(

I love Free!
Nagisa is probably my favourite character, because it's just fun to watch a character who is so positive and bubbly. Though, with Rin's behavour I couldn't really get through the first season.

Not really excited for new Doctor Who.
It's great that it's on the spring, AS IT SHOULD BE, but...
I only caught a few glimpses of the trailer and it seemed to be more Moffat "he's so mysterious and badass and edgy and cool", and I tuned out.
I miss the Doctor just being A Guy who travels around space and time looking for interesting things to look at, who just happens to get dragged into messes, not the mythological badass reflexive liar Moffat loves.
Already watching the new series is feeling like it's going to be an obligation rather than something fun.

Very surprised by some of the stuff I've heard about the new Digimon Tri.
Though not so much by the apparent lack of any development on what happened to the 02 kids.
On a related note, hoping that eventually Tamers will get a DVD release following the first two series, but it's looking pretty doubtful, which is sad.
Tamers was great.

Swinging back to unpleasantness, recently someone I know had serious problems grasping the basic principle that someone with a learning disability... might have a problem remembering something, even with repeated instruction.
Their reasoning was that since this person was smart, they were obviously faking it, or "not trying".
Because obviously being smart completely prevents a person from having a learning disability.

... also, been playing Digimon World: Next 0rder a lot. Fun, but ye gods is it time-consuming.
(and my 'mons get beaten up a lot... good thing one of the game features allows for having one's behind kicked.)

Some new podcasts I love:

The Byron Chronicles
Sort of what would happen if Doctor Who had been written for the horror genre. Byron, the pale man (voiced by David Ault from the nosleep podcast) is an immortal creature of unknown type that has at times been our world's salvation and its damnation. He and a number of usually female companions are fighting against the machinations of god-like beings. Enemies include werewolves, vampires, evil Santa Claus, nights and dawns of the living dead, and the devil (who is going by Mr Logan at the moment). Really well produced. The page is a little out of order, so you'll have to search for the pilot episode.
Note: a lot of people die around Byron, and since most of them are female you might say there's a fridging problem. I put it down to conceits of the horror genre, but I could see how others might have more of a problem with it.

the Strange N Unusual podcast
A semi-anthology horror/comedy podcast. More comedy than horror. Most of the stories are in the "Friend of the Family" series, about a teenage girl who has been appointed to be the latest in an ancestral line of hunters, meaning she now holds the reins to Asmodeus, a centuries-old, sociopathic, lustful vampire who swore an oath to their family line and would just as rather see her and her whole family dead. Most episodes are parodies of other supernatural stories, including Buffy and Twilight.
If you only listen to one episode, make it the Lovecraft episode, my favorite by far.

Eh... he doesn't quite yet. Bush implicitly tortured people and then went on TV admitting that he tortured people. He also murdered tens of thousands of Iraqis and Afghans. And now, as though nothing happened, he gets to retire and paint pretty pictures. It's all very perverse.

Before Trump is worse, he'd actually have to do something that bad and ruin as many lives as Bush did. Though the sheer unpleasantness and explicit racism of his little airport scheme is certainly up there.

Trump's wife is currently engaged in a lawsuit against the Daily Heil, which probably explains why they were barred from the gaggle along with the more liberal outlets.
