Oh Black Cat, I miss you. You were a fun character. Whatever happened to you?

She had a point. Either the symbiote is a dangerous animal and should be killed to make everyone safe, or its sentient and doing wrong. To make a comparison, a slaver doesn't think slaves are people like them--does that mean the slaver is not fully culpable for abuses? The "doesn't know they're truly doing wrong" defense has severe limitations.

Here, in addition, the entity is absorbing power. Why isn't it also capable of self-knowledge when using someone else's mind? There's some scifi arguments about consciousness not being necessary for complex life, which might apply to the symbiote. But that also means that killing it means no more than killing a unique amoeba.

At least in the regular books, they introduced the idea that Spider-man's symbiote DID absorb enough consciousness to evolve and gain feelings. Which would make all the arguments about morality actually apply. In this story? They don't.

In the What-If of the What-If...

"Bruce! Your grand intelligence managed to best the willpower of the Hulk to come through in the eleventh hour! Quickly - what can we possibly do to separate this alien being from Spider-Man?!"

"...I 'unno, rub him down with vinegar? Make him drink water from the other side of the cup? My doctorate is in Nuclear Physics, Reed. What the hell."

"Oh. Right. Yes. I forget that we keep forgetting that."

"Hey, though, I have a fun thing we *can* try - go and get a pair of pants, and then put me in them, STAT, because hey, lookie, mine are all ragged! And my "OTHER Other Guy" doesn't like strangers any more than the first Other Guy."

Well if his doctorate is Nuclear Physics, then wouldn't Bruce's answer be "Nuke the Living Hell out of it?"

(Then again, maybe not, this is the Marvel Universe after all, and the type of Radiation Bruce specializes in tends to have big green side effects.)

I think giving the Hulk even more radiation would turn him into the Maestro, and who knows what the symbiote possessing him would be like.

This would be an interesting story to revisit now, with all the revelations/additions that have been made to the symbiote over the years. If nothing else, by the time Flash had it, it seemed like it had become reasonably pleasant to be around.

Wasn't that because it was drugged? The last time I read Flash with the symbiote, it had a time limit before it would start bugging out, take over his mind and start eating people.

Indeed, Flash Thompson wasn't allowed to have the Symbiote for more than any given time lest the thing bond with him permanently (which ended up happening when he went rogue). Guardians of the Galaxy later had a story arc where Venom was returned to his home planet and 'healed', though they still had some violent tendencies.

While I enjoyed this What If... I have always wanted to read one where Peter and the Symbiote managed to find a way to get along together - obviously thus would before the first separation.

Yeah. The symbiote was so convenient! And it eventually loved Peter! And Carnage seemed to be in full control, as well as Venom, really. Also, Mayhem from the Spidergirl universe, who was fully merged to the point she WAS the symbiote. And some other Spidergirl in some alternate universe.

Interesting that at no point do they seem to try a psionic ntervention, something to separate the minds and perhaps create a wedge between the symbiote and host.

While this was dramatic and otherwise engaging, I couldn't get into it totally because THE SYMBIOTIC DOES NOT WORK LIKE THAT! GOOD NIGHT!

Well that and Reed Richards grabbing the pacifist-colored idiot ball:

"No Torch! Don't use the one other weapon we know will work on the symbiote! You might hurt Peter! Surely being mind-controlled and drained of life if preferable to some burn scars!"

"This thing killed Spider-Man, nearly killed Bruce Banner and was about to do the same to Thor. Clearly it doesn't know right from wrong!"

Huh, when Thor did the double-tap of Mjolnir (and wow, that sounds like some sort of sex act, doesn't it?), I thought he was trying to revert to Donald Blake, thus robbing the symbiote of the power it was after.

It's odd how Peter/Symbiote escaped; I mean, its not like Reed knows anyone who can erect force fields or anything.
