The worst part for the Joker, every time he goes sane with full memory: the realization of what he's been.

In the early 90s, before I started drawing my own stuff and was still trying to be a writer, I submitted a proposal to Archie Goodwin where via a Ludovico-technique type process the Joker was forced into sanity. A flat, lithium-like sanity but sane all the same. And he's released. Without any consideration about what is he going to do for work, or how people will react to him on the street, and how many people will want to kill him. Things go as you'd expect; he sweats off makeup during a job interview, he can't get a place to live, and a convenience store owner shoots him out of fear because he's the Joker, though he doesn't do anything. The shock of the shot trauma undoes the treatment, and he was cured all right.

Archie sent me a handwritten postcard--since lost in a move, goddamn it--rejecting it in the nicest possible way, and he even doodled an "Archie" on it.

I understand they later did a variation on this theme but I'm not bitter. ;)

I tend to not like comics that treat sanity like an on/off switch.

Yea - that's a bit of a stick wicket narratively. Though if one takes the Killing Joke - thats how Joker views it. The "One Bad Day" theory that could break a person.

There is depression that is situational - where its not quite an on off switch and but does tend to be more of a cause effect trigger. But...not sure there's such a thing as a situational...full fledged mania.

There might be, though I think Joker might fit more strongly into heavy schizophrenia and/or psychosis. They did the same thing with Harley Quinn a few months back in Suicide Squad.

Or maybe that's just the Joker's justification, his sole way--if perverse--to connect himself to humanity, to say none of us would be any better under the right circumstances. "Maybe it was just you, all along."

I tend to believe that. I've been through many truly, amazingly bad days that absolutely came from seeming nowhere. And I haven't felt any urge to kill anyone. I'm reasonably sure I can say the same of most of my friends. Well, maybe not one or two. But.

The problem is that fictional mental illness is much more fun when it's inaccurate. Real mental illness is just depressing and frustrating and sad, if accurately treated in a context that would be interesting in drama; you end up with LIFETIME.

Alfred doesn't seem to trust Bruce protecting him from Joker.

That reminds me of that arc where the Joker had cut off his face and tapped it back on, during that whole thing Alfred had a dream where he just unloaded a shotgun into Joker at point blank.

In Alfred's defense, he's seen what the Joker is capable of.

It's... probably slightly problematic, in terms of how it treats mental illness, but I do really like this scene. I recall a few other times the Joker's been made "sane" and the guilt he's felt.

Yeah, Morrison did it in the Rock of Ages JLA storyline with the use of the Martian Manhunter, I believe.

He did. The fallout there was even J'onn's mental abilities weren't enough to keep the Joker's mind "ordered" for more than a few minutes... and while "ordered", Joker was incredibly vulnerable to suggestion (which Luther exploited to get his own butt out of a sling).

All of which was, akin to the examples above, problematic but interesting.

Bruce, all those times you haven't killed the Joker were bad enough. Did you really need to bring him back to life?

Yeah, I wondered why they were bringing him back to life, but Cyberghostface gave the reason.

I approve of Alfred's caution. Sometimes Bruce doesn't think straight when it comes to the Joker, for some reason.

I think 'Death of the Family' had Batman believe that should he actually go through with killing the Joker, a power vacuum would emerge and someone just as bad (if not worse) would take his place. I think they explored the concept of Batman withput the Joker in Arkham Knight as well.

I'm sorry, I can't get over the first panel of the two of them tossing Joker into the pit, looking for all the world like "GUH, FINE, JUST DO IT."
