Why did these stories have to stop? Why?

Because Jon wanted to take a break and write about how Captain America and Iron Man are a bit crap before finishing his run with Secret Wars?

His Avengers run did have problems, but Marvel was going to do a big universal reset anyway and Hickman was the best option they had to handle it. The other choice was Rick Remender since he and Hickman had dueling major Avengers titles that didn't even seem to take place in the same universe. Having seen the mess Axis made, Marvel made the right pick.

Come to think of it, the third choice was probably Brian Michael Bendis... so we really dodged a bullet in comparison.

Wait, what's unscientific about poking something with a stick?

It's science's oldest tool!

More than Avengers, more than Fantastic Four, I think the title Hickman really wanted to do all along was "Franklin and Valeria".

I certainly wish he would have gotten to right a book about Franklin and Val.

Also, i miss Franklin and Val.

It is bizarre that Hickman wrote this, which has moments that are genuinely funny, even the exploding corpse (what?) and yet this is apparently the same Hickman who wrote such a bleak and pointless run of Avengers and New Avengers.
What happened in the space of a few months? Was he shoved into a closet by an evil duplicate who proceeded to take over his life?

So you've read "The Manhattan Projects" too?

I've asked myself the same question, and ultimately decided it was simply a question of being ill-suited to the Avengers. The big, conceptual stuff works well with the FF, because they've always been on the forefront of that. But it's balanced by incredibly strong family bonds.

And the Avengers team Hickman put together was pretty expressly not the kind of close knit-family unit some of the other Avengers line-ups were. It was a much more "fill a lot, we need a person with powers y and skillset x" kind of thing.

Plus in the case of his adjectiveless Avengers, there were a lot of them and not all of them got much focus.

Yeah. A 20+ line-up (including four original characters) doesn't help either.

I think it's simply the case of the same written wanting to tell different kinds of stories.

Though i also think having to work towards Secret Wars had something to do with it.
