Previously, in SUPER POWERS...

"I'm a huge comics fan and it feels like the industry has been on auto-pilot for the past decade. All the interesting stuff is being done on the fringes. Trying to bring some of that to the center." -- Tom Scioli

I hope that Joker panel isn't a Heath Ledger reference. Christian Bale supposedly said that people who think playing the Joker contributed to Ledger's death "don't understand the nature of acting."

In what way could it be read as a Heath Ledger reference?

Some think playing the Joker is why Heath Ledger died, or at least why his health took a turn for the worse.

I was probably over-thinking it.

"Thanks to him" is kind of an open-ended reference, isn't it? But I thought it might have been James Holmes. Referencing any real-life tragedy is sticky business, but that interpretation strikes me as a harder one to argue with.

Much as I hate to admit, that quote aboute the industry does have a point.

Possibly, but I only count this crap as "interesting stuff" in the sense that it's an interesting train wreck.

The interesting trainwreck's one up on the different route through the same places, though, or the offroad drive through familiar lands that results in folks loudly demanding we get back on the main road (whatever they think it is) already.

Well, clearly that goes without saying.

I'd argue that's almost always been the case. Most of the memorable stuff that people recommend long after it was published isn't the giant, headline-grabbing events.

On a similar note, I'm realizing more and more that most stuff from Marvel or DC is largely disposable in the grand scheme of things. Only once in awhile you'll get a stand-out storyline or creative team run.

I think he's blowing his own trumpet a little too much. Image, Dark Horse, IDW wouldn't really be considered 'fringe'; they're smaller than the big two, but not unnoticed in the manner he seems to be suggesting. It also ignores the plentiful amount of material that is not connected to the ongoing big-events juggernaut at either of the big two, which turns out all the better for it.

As much as I don't care for the almost indecipherable (to me) storytelling structure here, I especially don't care for this kind of fourth wall breaking stuff. I can pretty much guarantee that no one has ever been killed in the real world by the Joker, and "threatening" me with that just destroys my suspension of disbelief. And I can pretty much guarantee that I'm not fighting a war against Batman.

Remember when breaking the 4th wall was daring and a sign of an iconoclastic writer?

It still can be. It just isn't here. So much of it just seems like someone saying "hey look, an audience!"

Nope. Breaking the fourth wall has always been a staple of hacky jokes.

People tell me that Grant Morrison's self-insertion in Animal Man was cool and edgy and original. /s

It wasn't breaking the fourth wall that was cool, it was what he did with it. Tropes are not bad, and tropes are not good.

Breaking the fourth wall has never been 'a sign of an iconoclastic writer', though it has been used by them. It's always been a staple of hack writing, but it's never been exclusively one.

It can be used for clever humour (see Deadpool at his best). It can be used for insightful commentary (see Animal Man). It can be used for 'eh, eh, see what I did there?' hack jokes (see Deadpool at his worst). It can be used for superficial 'commentary' (see 90% of the attempts to ape Animal Man).

Don't go disparaging a silver medal, Diana. Chewbacca didn't even get one of those.
