So I go to bed last night hearing the news of Chuck Berry's passing at age 90, which is deeply sad, and wake up this morning to read that Bernie Wrightson has passed away at 68, from brain cancer, which is heartbreaking.

Bernie Wrightson was, by any artists measure, a genius. A master of linework, mood and atmosphere for over 40 years. His illustrations for Frankenstein (50 of them, completed over seven years) remain the gold standard by which any other artists work is measured (and that's not me saying that, that's other artists' just check out Facebook for tributes from every artists you've ever heard of and a few you might not have.)

On a more directly comic related subject of course, he co-created a rather seminal creature in the DC Universe, Swamp Thing;

He drew Batman: The Cult (a series whose story I never warmed to, but for which the art was stellar)

And the memorable Spider-Man graphic novel "Hooky"

We had some of his Batman/Aliens work posted earlier this week, and here is a sample of an uncoloured page of the crocodile-hatched Xenomorph

He hadn't been well of late, and had cancelled all future convention appearances, but I don't think we'd expected to lose him so soon.

I'm sure I speak for the Mod Team, and indeed everyone on scans_daily, when we send our condolences to his wife, family and many, many friends.

And of course, if you would care to share your favourite Bernie Wrightson story as a tribute, that would be much appreciated.

Wow. I'll admit I was not at all familiar with this creator or his work (I mean I know Swamp Thing but didn't know he was the co-creator) but looking at these scans of his artwork, it's clear what a visionary and excellent creator he was.

Damn shame. Wrightson might be my second favourite comic book artist, only surpassed by Scott Hampton. We're poorer for the loss.

When I was a kid I had a local black-and-white reprint of an early Swamp Thing (well, I say black-and-white but the paper was so cheap it had gone a strange mustard yellow). I used to trace the lines of the swamp vines with my fingers in fascination, and wonder what was actually going on with this big, sad creature. I later got to read the actual comic and it was just as mysterious and amazing as I remembered. RIP Bernie Wrightson.

Crap, I had no idea he died. I read his Swamp Thing issues not so long ago and they are absolutely beautiful.
