Why does everyone have big puffy lips. It's weird.

Also, this plot point... I'm not sure I'm really feeling it. There's something about it that's not quite right.

"...It's the humans. So here's my plan I'm going to make a robot version of my mom and marry her. Then I'm going to make a robot version of a dead hero and be surprised when he's a hero. After that, I figure humanity will be dead."

"You know, the real Tony was way funnier than you."

"Okay, how about sending a robot through time to kill the mother of my worst enemy?"

"The Mandarin?"

"...kinda funny."

You know, my problem with this is that Sharon Carter isn't fanatically loyal to SHIELD and she has made similar criticism to what Riri is saying.

Like i can see Mari Hill acting that way, but not Sharon.

What, Bendis writing someone out of character? Say it ain't so! D:

but yeah, that seemed very off to me.

"I can make these criticisms because I'm an insider but you can't because you're just looking at it from the outside" is a pretty common prejudice.

Wow, Riri sounds so articulate...for a thirty year old with a Masters in Political Science. For a fifteen year old girl, not so much. It just feels so ham-fisted, with Bendis spouting his views through his latest pet character.

She created a functioning Iron Man suit, I have to guess she'd be more intelligent sounding than your average teen. (You want to see a writer spouting ham-fisted political views, pick up a Nick Spencer book.)

Doesn't really make her qualified to talk about this though. Plus, we are talking about Bendis here, not Spencer.

A.) What makes her unqualified?

B.) Well aware, thanks. But we're talking about writers using characters as vehicles for ham-fisted political commentary so the comparison is a relevant one.

Being one of the best engineers in the world does not qualify you for politics. It doesn't mean you know how people work.

When should people be allowed to talk politics? Do they need a college degree?

I dunno, I remember being a fairly smart, socially isolated fifteen year old. I sounded a lot like that.

Both of those descriptors are relevant. "Smart" means you blow through all of your school assignments in an hour. "Socially isolated" means you have nothing else to do with the rest of the day, because you don't have any friends. So you spend six or seven hours per day just... exploring. Reading, thinking, researching, running little experiments, etc. By fifteen, you've been doing that for several years.

Some of Riri's aspects ring false to me: her ease in relating to "normal" people, her skill at reading social cues, her empathy for her mother's perspective. But being able to speak articulately? No problem. She's spent years consuming that material.

There are times when "genuine problems with how the heroes operate" does not mean the complainer is always wrong, to quote TV Tropes. Or, when someone complains about how the X-Men handle things, they will not go "Kill all humans." (Except Marrow and Quentin Quire.)

....... Sorry guys I tried but I'm just not that hooked on this character at all,
It's a problem I have with several of Marvel's recent legacy characters that are popping up, aside from Ms. Marvel.

To those that like her series, I say I hope the ride is worth it and pray that Bendis doesn't pull another deuse ex machinia again.

No, having criticisms about how SHIELD does things doesn't mean you're against them. But saying you think they're the devil usually does.

Well I'm just gonna say, Riri standing there, in the Iron Man suit (instead of her towering Ironheart suit) with the mask up and her hair out is pretty fucking cool looking. That's an image I've been wanting for awhile.

You don't need a degree to understand people. If you've got some rank at SHIELD, you might just be in the business of understanding people since that's likely to be in your job description, but ignoring that? I'll go with "You know, when you're not in the middle of adolescence."
