cyberghostface: (Spider-Man)
[personal profile] cyberghostface posting in [community profile] scans_daily

On his way he runs into the Vulture who had just performed a jewelry heist.

Vulture tells Spidey to meet him at their sight of their first encounter in half an hour to finish things once and for all.

Vulture pulls out a gun.

Jenkins and Bucky are one of my favorite Spider-Man creative teams.

Jenkins does this, yet also did FRONTLINE. And FRONTLINE had problems beyond the MySpace speech. It said the Registration Act really WAS superhero conscription.

Well, "work for the government or get arrested" is conscription. The US still has mandatory draft registration for men 18-25, but it's not conscription until they're actually called up.

No one ever sat down and determined what the SRA actually was, though, so sometimes it was conscription, sometimes it wasn't.

I think of conscription as "becoming an agent or soldier of the government." A fancy three-syllable word for "draft." After the Registration, the government and Tony were telling the heroes what to do, namely capture Cap and his side.

If you want to drive a car, you have to register with the government (via the DMV). Registering doesn't mean you're required to drive a government cab. That's registration, but not conscription.

The SHRA was presented in some situations as actual conscription--as soon as you registered, you'd be sent to get combat training and then assigned to a government-directed team. You'd be put on this involuntary career path whether you wanted to be a hero, or just had a power and wanted to live quietly.

That's why people are upset about the SHRA being presented as conscription. Imagine if you just wanted to have a car, but just getting a license meant you'd enrolled in the armed forces. Sucks, right? Only getting a driver's license is still a choice--powers tend to come involuntarily.

And, let's not forget, conscription of minors, some of whom had distinctly nonoffensive powers, who had control and just wanted to live their lives. I really wish staff at Marvel remembered how fucked up and tragic what the SHRA did to Cloud 9 and the other kids like her. Or how they felt the need to throw out the baby with the bathwater and kill the government sponsored state teams when the act got overturned. Ugh. I am just throwing my hands up in the air now.

It... it was? Did you read Initiative? A girl whose only power was to fly on a cloud got drafted into a military like service and turned into a sniper because of the registration act.

Hey everyone, have you heard that Paul Jenkins also wrote Frontline?

What's the deal with Alan Moore? You mean to tell me the same person wrote League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and garbage like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier?

Next you'll be telling me 80s Frank Miller and 2000s Frank Miller are the same person.

Wasn't that to one where the guy thinks JJJ is Spidey?

If I lived in the MU in that era, I feel like I'd probably think Flash Thompson was Spider-Man. It's just so obvious.

(Of course Jenkins wrote a story shortly after this that would kinda ruin that theory)

That was a great moment! :)

Calling Johnny is just Peter's thing. :) Though as someone said, he should've had Johnny swing by May's and melt the driveway snow.

I read this as 'Aunt May wants Peter to swing over as Spider-man and use his super strength to shovel her driveway.

Peter called Human Torch to deal with the Vulture because he's smart like that, but *not* smart enough to have Torch 'happen' to melt the drivewave snow before flying back home.'

Was this during the time when she knew who he was?

The initial exchange really comes off as a bit weird, and not quite in voice for either May or Peter.

And really, spider-powers or not, swinging around town in spandex in literal below-zero temperatures...

This came out between May finding out and confronting Peter about it though how it lines up with those stories is anyone's guess.

Just as an aside, I think Jenkins handled the Peter/May Spider-Man conversation better than JMS. Of course, so did DeMatteis when he did it first and Bendis in Ultimate.

It's strange to think that Jenkins (one of the most underrated Spider-Man writers) and JMS (one of the most overrated) had so much overlap.

I honestly am not sure but if she *doesn't* know it's pretty weird.

"Oh I'm *sure* you can find a way," is totally a 'I know you're a superhero,' line.

If May doesn't know, then her super villain origin story here kinda sucks.
