Yup, nothing like having another character tell us all about a character to establish them.
Riveting stuff.

This really isn't Cornell's best work by a long shot.

I can't fault the idea of the connectivity on that last page, but I think about the $2.99 price tag and the wait-for-the-trade-at-best quality of everything New 52 that wasn't Action Comics or Batman and groan.

"Only human to ever turn an attempted alien abduction into a UFO hijack" remains an all time great as far as one line origins go.

And while I'm torn on whether Cornell's or Ellis's interpretation of how Hawksmoore 'hears' cities is the better way to go, I'll say I definitely prefer the implications behind the HQ cathedral over Ellis's idea that a place's size was the sole determiner of whether Jack's powers counted it as a city.

Interesting that Cornell's still seeding long term mysteries (the Manhunter's origin is a lie, Jenny's powers don't work how people think), even though he leaves in just an issue. I wonder if that means a) his leaving was an eleventh hour decision, or b) they were ideas from editorial and the plan was for future writers to develop them?

Given the high level of editorial control that was in force at DC at the time, and the level of writer turnover happening as well...
Probably a mix of ideas suggested by editors, and some ideas Cornell had intended to develop but never got a chance to work on.

I'm sure it was Editorial meddling. Most of the early New 52 series experienced rapid creator turnover in a matter of months, most complaining of interference in anything they were attempting to do. The general impression was that many high-profile writers and artists were under the impressions they had a mandate to rework DC into a modern context and then found that they had their legs cut out from underneath them when they actually tried. At least half of the new 52 were Dead On Arrival, with reworkings that were largely despised or at the very least rejected by fans of the original material. Even the material that was an inventive reworking felt rushed and in some cases reworked on-the-fly.

That the New 52 in many cases tried to fix what wasn't broken, while simultaneously leaving some stuff like Batman and Green Lantern continuities in place (since they were big sellers) made the DCU MORE confusing, not less. As an avowed 'jump on' marketing move, it failed dramatically. It did raise sales for several months...until the shine was off the apple and then things returned to normal again.

And then they rewrote J'onn's origin at least... twice? Maybe three times? Over the course of things so far.

So do we ever learn who/what that Mysterious Shadow-Star Man is?

And the consequences, let's not forget the consequences. They were...

um, there were consequences?
And oh yeah, Grifter had a series.
