" At present my hand is simulating over one million instances of pure rage, holding the ring in a stasis of fury. "

What a fascinating capability! It's such a shame the visual effect of it is you making a plot device with your arm to explain why the thing isn't doing the thing to the guy.

why do people think stuff like those comments about the Green Lanterns are anything but terrible?

This Stormwatch is so full of themselves. "We allow them their delusion."

I can get being proud of their quiet accomplishments, but things are a bit over the top and into the "these are real jerks," category.

The difference is that Green Lanterns work for a circle of secretive, morally-dubious immortals, whereas Stormwatch works for a completely different circle of secretive, morally-dubious immortals.

Back in the Authority days, the lead characters' arrogance was more or less excusable because they really were the mightiest beings in the universe and were frequently called upon to prove it. Their power changed the course of human history, ending and replacing whole governments. There was also a satire of celebrity culture in there, as, naturally, they were hugely famous.

Stick them into a DC Comics setting, though, and you can't allow any of that, not without making the JLA their subordinates, and we all know that's not going to happen unless and until Midnighter starts outperforming the Batman movies at the box office. In the long run, power levels are arbitrary: Superman's been turned up and turned down more often than a thermostat in a house full of roommates.

Cornell's solution, to have these in-your-face guys suddenly develop an interest in doing things in secret, is... about the best solution possible, and it's still not very good. When your characters are standing around and telling each other "Sure, we could spank the whole Green Lantern Corps like a bunch of eight-year-olds if we really wanted" in the same breath that they're fretting about a single Red Lantern... well, somebody's allowing somebody a delusion there, Engineer, but I think you've got at least one pronoun misplaced.

Additionally, while they were the top, they didn't belittle and mock others for not being them. When they met Captain Atom in Armageddon, they were haughty (imo a bit much so), and heavy-handed in their actions, but did recognize him as a fellow hero and all. Plus, heck, they knew Mr. Majestic, a tights-and-cape guy himself. When he came up in conversation it was teasing Apollo by suggesting they hire Majestic as a replacement.

I think the secrecy angle is fine, but the "Oh, we're the professionals, they're just amateur hour," stuff is what I could leave. I think a better angle would be them worrying and watching about another team that they fully admit to be on their level, and noting they were afraid to step forward because they feared the possible societial repercussions and are kinda hopeful the JL can do what they can't and wondering what doors it'll open to them.

Quite.

All this bragging makes them feel like they're puffing themselves up to look bigger.
