"My description of what Victor would look like without his scars or his costume is that it’s a look of a European man who’s got that look like he knows he’s the hottest shit in the universe. It kind of looks like Alex Maleev, as well, and kind of looks like Vincent Cassel sometimes. That’s what they come up with which was pretty funny. I like Vincent Cassel a lot. I think he’s a wonderful actor. I don’t want to insult the guy by saying that was my description." -- Brian Michael Bendis

Doom says he does not know and leaves. Grimm turns around to go back to his room and is shocked.

I don't know how I feel about Doom complimenting Reed without throwing a snarky comment afterwards. I like the idea of Doom trying to be a good guy (before he inevitably returns to being his usual self down the road), but it feels weird to me for him to treat Reed with so much respect.

To me, it only works after Secret Wars, when he had so damn much of his ultimate master plan going right... And it still crumbled to pieces. I've really enjoyed this series, and how a lot of it is Doom trying to walk a hero's path (without the cliched 'do as I say or I shall crush you!!!') and eating a lot of humble pie along the way (much like fellow egotist Stark has to when he loses another company, etc.)

Doom reflecting on his past youthful behavior, and recognizing, as he points out to Ben, he's in a very unique category of people, and even if Reed isn't exactly his 'friend' he has to acknowledge him as his peer (eventually). Though the issue that flashback occurred in, he didn't answer Reed's question, "why do you hate me?" so we don't know Bendis' response for that.

Now that you say it, it does make sense . . . he got everything he ever wished for, and he still fucked it all up. It would be reasonable for him to get pretty shaken up by that and reevaluate things.

He also admitted that Reed would have done better in his shoes, which is a life-altering epiphany, I think. (Even if I don't actually agree that he was correct.)

I think various stories recently also showed how Reed was humbled in constantly trying to 'fix' everything (the whole "Council of Reeds" fiasco, leading to Doomwar, etc.), so he also had to eventually take a step back and think about how walking so far down a path he thought was right was just going to race him headlong into a brick wall*

*This is giving the writers benefit of the doubt and not hating characterization or storylines, but I got tired of the constant stories of the years where Reed again just secludes himself in the lab, tries to make some wild machine that violates the laws of thermodynamics or something, only to have it all blow up in his face and realize he should pull back and just be part of the FF and not a lone mad scientist (and, y'know, maybe release some of those great inventions from time to time... no? okay.)

To me, it's weird that he doesn't talk in third person anymore.

I'm enjoying this. How long before Marvel undoes it?

The second Reed and Sue return, probably.

Honestly, I hope we get at least some of Hero Victor and Not-Ultimate Reed working together. It's all good for Doom to talk the talk, but actually working with Richards without letting his darker parts take over would be the real test of whether or not he can really be a Hero.

This Doom is very weird. And I wish we got an explanation other than "epiphany."

I agree with the comments above that this works for me, post-Secret Wars and all of Hickman's material that preceeded it. Doom had nothing but time to think during the events of that series and the realization that Reed would have done a better job than him was probably pretty life altering, especially after losing all that power.

I am suspecting that when rebooting the universe, Reed had him "fixed"
