"The difference between the Wolfman or Johns’ Deathstroke is I’ve taken their interpretations of the character and made them more internal. Deathstroke no longer brags about how great he is, he simply goes and does. You define character by action — by what they do, rather than having characters standing around yawn talking for 20 pages. They go, they do. We stop writing down to fans but allow them to interpret character and draw their own conclusions — Deathstroke is an arrogant, emotionally crippled person. I don’t have anyone telling the fans that, I don’t have any captions saying that. Fans are not stupid and they don’t like being condescended to. Most fans I know tend to read analytically and enjoy writing on both the narrative and subtextual level." -- Christopher J. Priest

I really wish Deathstroke would get his ass punked by a superhero one of these days. Just get a train (of fists) run on him by, just, a total B-list teen hero.

Ugh, no. Superhero comics are like pro wrestling. Investment and build-up are everything. What's the point of tearing down one of your most hateable villains? You need your bad guys to have credibility. If he's a punk, then everyone he's ever beaten looks bad.

Deathstroke killed a dog.

Hired a guy to sleep with his daughter.

Hired people to pretend to be his daughter's maternal family.

Slept with his son's fiance who's spying on his son.

This guy is an abusive scumbag.

That's the whole point though. And as long as the narrative doesn't start making excuses for it, I think it's great.

I love the way Priest has been writing Deathstroke. Showing how everything Slade does makes sense from his perspective, without making him any less of an abusive scumbag. Writing good villain protagonists is hard, but that's exactly how you do it. I'd so much rather read a Deathstroke who's complicated, but still an unmitigated bastard than yet another take that tries to make him engaging by going for lazy sympathy moments and low-hanging "morally ambiguous antihero" fruit.

And yes there is an excluded middle here, it's possible to write sympathetic villains and antiheroes well too, but I don't want Deathstroke to be that. He's one of the DCU's marquee supervillains. Let him be someone who's worth hating.

Girl, which is why I am hoping he goes for a guy. (I know it sounds cruel but every time there is a bisexual character they almost always go for a male/female relationship if its a male)

I don't think so.... he's generally steered clear of straight up cruelty.

He's been shown to drug, physically abuse and psychologically abuse his children and to believe that it's in their best interests.

He's hired people to seduce his children so he can spy on them.
He's hired people to pretend to be their family.

Dog fights are one thing, but I don't think Vick ever drugged and hit his kids.

Oh, I'm aware of his sins. I don't like any of them against people or dogs, hence my comment above.

As for Vick, anyone who routinely kills animals (or is part of an operation that does) shows sociopathic tendencies. I have no idea what he does with his family but nothing would surprise me.
