In 1998 two things happened in the Star Wars universe: Natalie Portman was cast to play the mother of Luke and Leia, and Darkhorse was at work adapting Timothy Zahn's Thrawn books. In issue 5 of "The Last Command," the opportunity arose for Padmé to make her first official appearance.

Here is that one page, penciled by Edvin Biukovic, inked by Eric Shanower, and coloured by
Pamela Rambo

In the LEGENDS continuity, Luke and Leia didn't find out about Padme until Troy Denning's The Joiner King. They get to see Anakin Force-choking Padme on Mustafar and take it about as well as you expect. The series also sets up "Jacen becomes an extremist."

Plus, I can't really see Padme hiding from Vader for longer than it takes to entrust her kids to loyal good people in a secret safe(ish... Tatooine was sort of a death trap tbh) environment. I imagine she'd start actively seeking him out to try and turn him back to the light side, like Luke did.

Though I must admit, even if it makes no sense, I like the idea of Padme getting to spend at least a short time with her babies.

It's also the only way that Leia's line in Jedi about remembering her birth mother (You know, despite her being adopted never having once beem mentioned in the previous 2.5 movies) makes any sense at all.

I've seen some awesome fic on tumblr about how since he's the "Golly gee shucks" farm boy with the goofy smile and the mop of hair, people forget that Luke basically grew up on planet HELL, where slavery was common, moisture had to be farmed, 2 METRE LONG rodents that you had to shoot from the air because you didn't approach a pack of the from the ground were a fact of life, and murderous sandpeople wandered the endless, lethal deserts.

I always chalked it up to the Force. Like, "fetus!Leia was able to feel her mom from the womb because she had Jedi potential" handwave.

Don't forget Jabba and his goons with a fetish for torturing people to death for entertainment and an obsession with holding grudges. And the race tracks in the canyon that make Nascar look like go-kart for baby moles.

All true, though I am perhaps not the best person to comment on the vagaries of what Hutt's might find appealing given I DID commission a twin-swap card...

And just in case anyone thinks I'm only objectifying him

Look! He's empowered!!

And also to credit Irma Ahmed for her lovely work (She worried that she hadn't done much beefcake work before... I was able to set her mind at rest that you certainly couldn't tell!)

!! I recognize her art--she's done some amazing work for KOTOR and Mass Effect. This Luke the Huttslayer mightily pleases me.

I've had a twinswitch card before, from Sonny Strait (Who did my standard icon image), and which didn't QUITE go the way I thought it would, though knowing Sonny's sense of humour I should have expected something like this! :)

When I saw Irma's take on the twinswich

I knew I'd end up with something great, but I was blown away with what I got...

Though, to be fair, ALL the cards I got from Irma were superb

I'm guessing Dark Horse wasn't working from a complete outline of the character here.

It's one of the slightly baffling parts of the old continuity that it apparently took Luke and Leia several decades to learn Padmé was their mother.

Okay, yes, Leia probably didn't care too much, R2 kept silent because... because, and Obi-Wan (jerk that he was) never bothered to so much as mention her even obliquely, but... there weren't any records in the Empire that could help even slightly?
Like some sort of magic fantasy DNA testing that could be done?

Sure, the Empire was crap and just got worse after getting it's behind kicked, but there wasn't any possibility for Luke to check?
(Frankly, it's amazing Return had the scene where Luke wonders about her at all. Only the father matters, clearly.)

Plus it starts when Artoo shows a holo of Padme by accident. And he tries to cover it up.

(From Joiner King)

The woman in the hologram.” Luke said irritably. “Show it to me again.” R2-D2's holoprojector obediently came to life, displaying the familiar, three-dimensional figure of an Alderaanian Princess in an elegant white gown. “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi,” the figure said. “You're my only hope.”
“Not that woman,” Luke said.

I don't think Artoo has ever done anything by accident in his entire life. He does things for obscure reasons, but that machiavelliean droid has been pulling human's this way and that for nearly a century..
