To commemorate the recent defeat of an extremist, intolerant French politician, here's a story featuring an earlier such figure. Warning for gore.

8 pages of 24 from The Sandman #29 (August 1991). Story by Neil Gaiman, pencils by Stan Woch, inks by Dick Giordano.

It's July, 1794 (Thermidor, Year II in the Revolutionary calendar) and Lady Johanna Constantine is in Paris on a mission from Dream of the Endless. The object: to rescue the stolen, still-living head of Dream's son, Orpheus, and return him to his caretakers in Greece. Despite her disguise as a simple country woman, Johanna is discovered and imprisoned by order of Maximilien Robespierre, ringleader of the post-Revolution Reign of Terror.

The Sandman visits Johanna in a dream and reiterates that he can't intervene personally in order to save his son and her. (Why he claims he can't is a long story.)

The next day Robespierre, having dreamt of Orpheus's hiding place--a pile of severed heads in the dungeon--has Johanna pick him out.

Why is it relevant who Robespierre has or hasn't slept with?

It's just an insult. "You're probably a virgin" - by implication, a naive and childish person. Or alternatively, bitter and uptight, compensating for something.

It's not particularly enlightened, but then, most insults have sketchy baggage when you unpack them.

I'd still rather have something more like "You're creating an age of reason by destroying that which you do not understand? I don't think you've quite understood the concept."

I mean, Johanna is the ancestor of John Constantine. That family is not known for their gentility or kindness when suffering fools. (Not saying that justifies it, only that it explains it)

In this context, I took it more as "you're a robot." Purporting to make a society without understanding humanity, and lacking any capacity for joy.

After all, Robespierre is a powerful man at this point. He could very easily get laid should he so choose. That he doesn't supposedly does not speak well of him. Especially to the French. :)

The myth of Robespierre is so strong that t pretty much always obscures the reality of the man, especially in english-speaking media. He was as much a puppet as a dictator, and was a useful scapegoat for the Thermidoreans (many of which had been leading agents of The Terror themselves)

Even the categorization of him as a dictator is wrong, he was an important member of the regime, but he never really wielded sole power.

OK as a French person I want to say that this story is based on the "myth" of the french Revolution and has no basis in history.
(Which is not against the comics! Neil Gaiman writes about myths! It's his thing, he does it really well!)

Just to say that I'm a bit offended by the comparison with Marine Le Pen, and i'd take Robespierre as president any day. ^^
