In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

At the MTV Awards, Hugh Jackman and Dafne Keen accepted the award for Best On Screen Duo for Logan, but Mr Jackman was put in his place by Ms Keen for wanting to give the acceptance speech. :)

In Politics, well, France has been the shining light, with Emmanuel Macron's Centrist party delivering a resounding defeat for Far Right nominee Marine Le Pen, whose tears at the loss give hope to us all. (It also led to one of the most amusing news stories of the week, as a British Twitter user gloated about how Le Pen was going to win, and how he'd put money on her victory, then tried to claim that their account had been used by their 13 year old child and so the bet was invalid. It's fair to say that not many people believed them :) )

In the US, the replacement for the AHCA has been passed by the  Senate House of Representatives, removing concepts like "Affordable" and indeed "Healthcare", especially as regards pre-existing conditions. The House Senate looks set to not be quite the pushover but it's looking pretty grim. The ACLU has put together a summary in case you find yourself in need of some depressing reading.

In the UK, last weeks Local Government elections were a mixed blessing as it cemented and expanded Conservative seats across the country (not good if you're not pro-Brexit) but it did destroy UKIP more or less completely (Though as many noted, since the Conservative Party now seem to embody many of UKIP's policies, it's not needed so much... which is not as reassuring.

Two pages by William Caxton, who introduced the printing press to Brtain in the 15th Century have been discovered in a Unversity Library

The BBC has announced that it's making a new series based on HG Wells classic "The War of the Worlds", but are taking the unusual step of NOT updating/relocating it (as all the most famous versions of it have done) and it will be set in Victorian England.

Thank God France did not give in to demagoguery. And, with the effective destruction of UKIP, I hope this signals an end in Europe of our dangerous flirtation with fascism. Though, here in UK, we've still got a whole lot of work to do. Most of the UKIP lot were nothing but a splinter of the Conservatives, and they'll probably sneak back in.

Its nice to see someone in the Western World not give into the fear mongering like we in the US and Britain did

You've got your houses of Congress switched: the House of Representatives passed the AHCA and the Senate is probably going to strip it down and start over (hopefully stalling out in the end).

The right-wingers will win. It's been a long-standing attitude in this country that if you're not rich, any illness you contract is on you, a moral failing on your part. So that's why we have never had universal health care and it will be a cold day in you-know-where before we ever do.

Extremely disappointed with the latest episode of Samurai Jack...

The first 7 episodes were VERY strong. Excellent writing, gorgeous visuals, thrilling action scene, great suspense, interesting plot, deep characterization!

...And then episode 8 came.

*sigh*

I'd heard some negative buzz about the episode before I saw it and I immediately hoped it wasn't *that* so I was very disappointed that I was right. I'm not liking the new developments but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt considering their track record so far.

News with France, good.
News of South Korea, less so.
News of Britain... mixed bag.
(Less UKIP is always great. More tories less so.)

Sadly, someone I know is hoping for the new tory mayor of their area to assist with some issues they've been having.
This kind of requires a politician to actually keep their promises, which...
well. It's kind of like asking a dragon for help.
Sure, you might get it. But don't be surprised if everything gets burnt down afterward.

Also, watched the first series of Star Wars: Rebels.
Enjoyed it.
But jeez does that thing not pull any punches.
And started reading one of those New Jedi Order books that was lying about - y'know, the kind of book you bought once because why not, and never actually cracked open.
That... not so much.
The writing gets very stilted and unnatural in some places. Kinda distracting.
And certain force-using characters are such massive asses it's a wonder no-one beat them to death with a shovel already.

That's hardly uncommon for the canon, of course. Even ignoring the actually evil ones, we have the Jedi Council (and Obi-Wan after he goes into hiding...'from a certain point of view', my ass, old man...), Kannan at various points (toward Ezra early in his training, and later to [spoiler redacted])...even Luke's kind of a jerk at various points, though not as bad as the Council, or Bad Teacher!Kannan. Hell, Ezra has a few moments, even. There's another who comes to mind immediately, but they're a biiig spoiler.

The most hilarious thing I've seen re: Le Pen was a screenshot of someone on the Donald Trump subreddit (r/thedonald, IIRC) complaining that she lost just because fewer people voted for her.

Then people in the twitter thread about it defending the comment, by claiming that the Electoral College is a firewall against corruption. (Which is why, of course, it has resulted in the election of the most openly corrupt American politician since Tammany Hall.)

(The concept of the 'tyranny of the majority' is a weird one, to me. While I understand the concept, and can see the importance of the idea, I have yet to see it invoked except to refuse extending rights to oppressed minorities.)

Wow, that line of thought doesn't make sense. Direct election is actually a good way to avoid corruption as you can't bribe an entire population. I just can't understand how the other way would be less corrupt.

I know the French system isn't perfect but IMO it beats both the way in which the Americans elect their president and the first-past-the-post system they've got going in Canada or in the UK.

The two-round system may not result in the best candidate being elected but it's pretty good at eliminating the worst.

I'm 80% irked by it, because of the blatant unfortunate implications of associating a "lose weight!" product with arguably the most important female superhero ever, as well as one of the extremely few who got a solo movie.

Buuuuuuuttttt... 20% of me has to admit that Diana, as a greco-roman inspired combatant from a warrior tribe who fights with sword and shield and lasso rather than fancy gadgets, is the character I'd most associate with body builders.

(And yes, I know that body builders don't train for actual strength, but for the appearance of strength, as lack of body fat can't fuel real power. Real weight lifters tend to be chubby. Still, stereotypically, if we picture a gladiator we picture him with abs).

Soooo... I'm irked, but not angry.

It agree with Stephen's sentiment even though the phrasing wasn't his classiest moment.

Still I wish the FFC wasn't being used as a weapon to silence anti-Trump talk show hosts.

In other news, I watched Rogue One yesterday, and it's by far my favourite Star Wars film. The sets alone are just beautiful, and what makes it such an incredible movie is that the characters feel like actual characters - they're not hokey cardboard cut-outs who have some great destiny, they're basically a bunch of screw ups thrown together who have to find a way to function as a team.
Honestly, I can't recommend it enough.

Yeah, I certainly agree. I liked TFA well enough, but the Imperial-era of SW is my favourite, so to play with a bunch of stuff from that era was really fun, and it all fits in really seamlessly, barring one or two bits brought up previously during an OTT.

I particularly liked Jyn, but given I'm normally drawn to the villains of a franchise, I have been really surprised with both this and TFA that I liked the heroes more. Not that the villains were anything to frown about; I liked Krennic as a branch-off of a Tarkin-type character, who not only seems to enjoy the power being an Imperial affords him, but almost seems to fetishise the Death Star and it's destructive capacity. Tarkin's comeback was.. Unusual - I'm not sure the tech is there just yet - but neat, and Vader was the coolest he'd been since the OT. Definitely agree, and it's a good kick-off for the 'Star Wars Stories' entries.

As a french, I'am not happy with the president we elected. When he was minister of economy, he showed how much he despises the lower classes.
Half the people who voted for him did it because it was him or Dell Rusk, not because they wanted a president who wants to run the country like if it was a start-up and gives 0 fucks about ecology.
That said, I sighed in relief sunday evening. The whining of the FN militants, of the /pol/ nazis and of the Putin bots was a nice melody.
I enjoyed a lot less the critics from a part of the left toward those of us who voted against Le Pen, accusing us of playing the establishment's game. We knew that, smartasses, but we choose to do it anyway because letting Le Pen win would be worse! There is now a division on the left opposition, between those who consider that far right is worse than capitalism, and those who consider that capitalism is the greater evil. A division that comes at the worse time, now that the left forces should fight against both Macron and Le Pen, instead of accusing each other to empower the facists or the capitalists.

On an unrelated note, I watched "Get Out" this afternoon. Great movie. That fealing of growing uneasiness was really well done. And the reveal caught me totally off guard.
