Tjhe announcement came through ScreenRant and within less than 12 hours, clarification has had to be made by the creator.

Which given recent Marvel related events is perhaps understandable, when the title of the series is

(The Cover for issue 2)

NIGHTWING: THE NEW ORDER is the story of a future world without “weapons”—where superpowers have been eliminated and outlawed. The man responsible? None other than Dick Grayson, a.k.a. Nightwing, now leader of a government task force called the Crusaders who are charged with hunting the remaining Supers. But when events transpire which turn the Crusaders’ aim toward Grayson’s own family, the former Boy Wonder must turn against the very system he helped create, with help from the very people he’s been hunting for years—the last metahumans of the DC Universe.

And some preview pages were released too

These images, and the blurb instantly led some of Nightwing's more devoted fans to believe that DC were making Dick a killer, and not just a killer, but a killer of heroes, which given he's the world's biggest Superman fanboy and counts a very large number methaumans amongst his friends and allies, seems a little counter-intuititve.

Of course the fact the writer is Kyle Higgins didn't help as his authorial past with Dick Grayson has been a tad contentious (He's a self confess Wingnut, but he's also the writer who one-upped Batman Beyond's "Bruce and Babs have a relationship", with Batman Beyond 2.0 throwing in Babs having a relationship with Bruce whilst Dick was out of town, and then not telling Dick when they resumed their former relationship but then her finding out she was pregnant by Bruce and.. Well, it was not the world's most popular plot points)

Now I bow to few in my admiration for Mr G, but I am also an old fart who is extraordinarily cynical and scepitcal about such things, Convereselt, I am also bizarrely optimsitic in outlook at times, trying to put the best spin on things in my head, so my assumption was that Dick is about the only person could pull a bait and switch on this scale. If he’s the one in charge of dealing with supers, he’s the best one to operate the underground keeping them alive when others might want them dead. He’d also be the only one that the majority of supers would trust in such a role, but that's complete speculation on my part.

However, the instant reaction has moved Mr Higgins to make the following tweet in his own defence... and since the first issue isn't even out until August 23rd that's quite the lead time!

I'll be interested to see where this goes, I hope.

(And I must post some more from Dick's current title, which has been interesting, if a little weird of late.

I'm guessing it's some kind of Elseworld.

It's a dumb as hell concept and comes out of nowhere, but my bet is still Elseworld.

Can't say I share your optimism, Icon. But... we'll see. Might be good. The fact that the writer reached out to reassure people, rather than talking down to them, is certainly a point in his favour that makes me more inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

We certainly get a lot of mileage out of Nightwing and Superman. LEGENDS OF THE DC UNIVERSE #6. Robin meets Superman for the first time.
NIGHTWING #102. Clark tells Dick about the Kryptonian Legend of Nightwing.
SUPERMAN: AMERICAN ALIEN #4: Dick Grayson meets Clark Kent for the first time. Dick uses the detective skills Bruce Wayne is teaching him to size up Clark.

It's nice to know that if Bruce and Clark finally stopped lying to themselves, Dick would get a great second dad.

Coincidentally (and perhaps a bit untelated, I'm not sure), didn't someone of the house of Zod become Nightwing at one point?

Yep, while Bruce was lost in time and Dick took over the Batman job for a while.

Even looking at the art, this feels like some Pre-52 Elseworlds throwback that was just found at the back of the drawer......

This is not Dick. Dickish, yes. Not Dick.

So the basic concept seems to be "Main character is racist until he learns it affects him."

...this is a logical extension of Nightwing's character how?

Reminds me of the Animal Man elseworld mini, where they just shoved any married hero into a round peg

So, when do Hollywood Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall show up?

Not a wrestling fan then I take it?

Anyway, in the mid-1990's wrestlers Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash left the WWF for the WCW (this would be sort of like Superman, Flash and Green Lantern leaving DC for Marvel) to form a wrestling faction called the "New World Order".

Okay, not the best joke. I suppose I could have made a Peter Hook reference instead.

Nightwing-centric content from a writer who explained previous plans for the character in terms of " [defining him] outside of ' used to be Robin ' "?

Wow, a writer must have very limited experience with Nightwing if they think he's only defined as "used to be Robin."

Good creative team (Loved Gates of Gotham) and it seems to be an Elseworlds tale, which we haven't had a long while, so I'm down for this. Fingers crossed!

Well he also said that this is a story abt how good people can come to believe in terrible things and i'm... not here for that. At all. I want to be optimistic that Dick could be a double agent or brainwashed, but after Cap I don't know anymore.

Also a really weird character to use for this story. I would believe that literally any other member of the Bat Family would be involved in something like this before Dick.

Honestly? I'm at the point where I don't want to see many more "dark" and "gritty" stories where the heroes act like villains.
People laugh at the Silver Age stuff, but I'd gladly pick up a comic where Nightwing battles an evil space rabbit, rather than having to see such a good character struggle through a mundane, mean-spirited farce.

I'll skip this, not because it's outrageous, but because it doesn't strike me as particularly interesting. This really is a fairly standard dark future storyline, and it likely wouldn't have garnered much attention where it not for Secret Empire having some readers on edge.
