"Also, we faked the moon landing."

That's concerning

"enhanced through our... medical research."

Yeah, what exactly does that entail?

He just dropped all these bombshells but he wouldn't explain the basis for creating artificial superhumans?

Does it shorten their lifespan? Perhaps Old Glory was simply another Mike Matarazzo.

Once you've got actual superhumans, medical research might go in some very unexpected new directions. New organs, new biological properties etc

I really loved this story when I first read as I thought it was actually pretty clever and touching. Now slightly nervous how well will it stand the test of time.

I think it aged pretty well.

To date, I think it's the only comic to acknowledge the different expressions of racism, the government conspiracy that employs the heroes is rather low key, the escalation to violence works for the era and characterization is pretty good given the limited space.

It seems like the commies would have noticed by now that they hadn't created any of the supervillains they were being credited with/blamed for...

I don't think it much matters, though. The people behind the project are more concerned about the Soviets creating their own superhuman project, than anything else.

They just want to have their own stockpile ready for when that happens.

Right but it raises the question of how the grand lie has been maintained that long. Faking a moon landing would be one thing- faking a gunfight with the Soviets on the moon would involve introducing someone with evidence it had been a fake and incentive to embarrass you.

Edit: Also- if a portion of these superheroes are naturally (or supernaturally, Freya) arising, why *is* it that they've only popped up in America?

All the fights take place on U.S. soil, in an era with no internet and far better cooperation between government and media. With careful planning, it wouldn't be too hard to control the narrative, so to speak

Right but even by the 30s and 40s, intelligence gathering would've been good enough that foreign governments would be taking all the media they could get their hands on, look at it, and go, '...Wait, that's not anything like what we're seeing." By the 60s, the Soviets would be getting weekly if not daily reports about some dude they'd never heard of that the Americans claimed they were responsible for, so that's just adding to the tension or at least raising the question again, "where are all the other metahumans?"

No internet, but they did have radio, and television, and newsreels, and all across the world.

I agree that this is too much of a closed loop. You can't have the American's claiming that the Russians/Communist China are sending superpowerful beings to attack the USA, without SOMEONE on the other side being quite vocal about "No, we're bloody well not, and attempting to claim we are is defamation" and then spending a bit of time finding out how staged all the stuff is so they can deflate tehe propaganda.
