Inthe comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

Well, good personal anthropomorphised cosmological concept almighty, the UK Political situation is currently.. I believe the term the young folk use is "cray-cray". To summarise for those who probably wisely, haven't been paying attention.
  • Britain voted (narrowly) for Brexit last year in a purely advisory referendum.
  • The Conservative Prime Minister who said he's oversee the Brexit process if it was voted for promptly quit, prompting a leadership election.
  • New PM eventually appointed after the rest of the contenders perform the political equivalent of a suicidal Keystone cops routine (I started to right that out but gave up, because no one would believe it all)
  • New PM triggers Article 40 to start the Brexit process
  • The new PM promised repeatedly she'd not call an election as we needed "stablity" and the current Parliament runs until 2020 anyway. (Since in the UK you vote in a party, not a person. the parties are allowed to change leaders without an election, though it's sometimes a risky move)
  • With less than two months to go before the start of Brexit negotiations, she calls a General Election to increase her majority.
  • Vicious campaigning, PM predicted to win a landslide despite genuinely appalling track record on campaign trail Refused to debate, constantly reciting "snappy" mantra's like a Dalek in a twin set ("Strong and stable" being the one that lingers), awful media presence, etc.
  • Young people come out to vote in record numbers, many for the first time (And bless every single one of them) and many vote for the opposition, a very old school Left Wing chap of a sort we haven't had in decades (think Bernie Sanders).
  • PM loses her majority.
  • UKIP wiped out and lose their only MP, who had already quit the party to defect to the Conservatives.
  • In order to achieve a majority, PM has to form an alliance of some sort with the only party prepared to do business with her, Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, which won ten seats in the election and so can swing things the Conservative way, for an unspecified political price.
  • The DUP has been described as both "the Political Wing of the Flat Earth Society", and "The UK equivalent of the Westboro Baptist Church". A bunch of highly religious, homophobic, anti-abortion, "woman's place is in the home" zealot throwbacks who would be only slightly scary if they weren't currently holding the balance of power in their hot, sticky hands (For some samples of their positions's try this list, but assume trigger warnings for homophobia, misogyny etc etc)
  • Alliance with DUP may seriously damage the UK's involvement in Northern Ireland government, as they are supposed to remain impartial and neutral when dealing with the various parties there, which they are now quite clearly NOT.
  • The leader of the Scottish Conservative Party, who is about to marry her same-sex partner, makes it clear to her London based boss that she is NOT happy about the DUP alliance.
  • Current PM's projected political lifespan measurable in weeks, possibly months, but can perhaps console herself with the fact that whilst she has incredibly low popularity, all her likely successors have even lower ratings.
As a friend put it "Basically, Britain is drunk and doing politics."

Sorry, I needed to vent a little I think.

Not that the US has much to be happy about with with the Comey deposition not exactly winning him friends at the White House, and the Trump machine, basically acting like the Trump machine does... which hardly needs cataloguing at this stage.

E3 is this week, so there will doubtless be good news and disappointing news depending on what you were expecting to hear.

The sad loss of Adam West has been noted already in another thread, but I will risk you ire by mentioning again. A host of delightful, and in many cases heartbreaking, tributes have been paid to Mr West since Saturday, including editorial cartoons, art tributes and perhaps my favourite, a US digital billboard company changing all their boards to the Batsignal shining into the night sky.

Michael Palin has donated a large quantity of notebooks, annotated scripts and diaries to the British library, which includes many pieces relating to Monty Python and his own travel writings. It's hoped they will eventually go on display.

The new Doctor Who may be announced soon, with former showrunner Russell T Davies revealing that he knows who it is, but is saying nothing beyond that. The most recent episode included the return of the Ice Warriors, and gave us our first female Martian in the form of the Ice Queen Iraxxa.

E3 this year feels a bit quieter this year than usual with not a lot big things being announced. Still got the Nintendo Direct though.

Liking Mario & Rabbids X-Com game, Spider-Man looks awesome, and Wolfenstein looks neat (the white nationalists and gamergaters are losing their damn minds).

I was never able to get into the first seasons of Samurai Jack, but I binge watched season 5 (which is up for free here: http://www.adultswim.com/videos/samurai-jack/ for a limited time) last night and loved it!

I had been planning on waiting for the DVD but who knows when/if that'll happen (What happened, Robot Chicken?) so i watched the whole thing last night.

Considering how many people were focused on the increased violence, I'm just happy they kept doing the creative artistic stuff like the fight in the snow.

Surprised by all the callbacks in a series the used to be mostly self-contained stories. Wow, the Scotsman has been BUSY.

Aku continues to be one of the funniest evil overlords. I was worried considering the original voice actor died during the hiatus.

And then there's the ending that reminds me of a certain giant robot anime. Poor Jack.

So I just finished reading the first Omnibus collection of Perez's Wonder Woman. I liked it very much, but at times the amount of storyline interactions with other books got confusing (especially since any editor notes that were present in the original books referencing other issues were edited out of the book).

So I know all the Manhunter stuff references Mellenium, but can someone point me towards a couple other points.

-Wonder Woman has her publicist help arrange a meeting with Superman so she can sort out her feelings for him (in what book does the meeting take place?)

-Darkseid attacks and ravages Olympus forcing the gods to quit, destroy it and make a new one (What book has the battle? I know it's not War of the Gods that takes place latter )

Those were the two main ones I wanted to look into.

You forgot the part about where, in reaction to recent terrorist attacks, she decided to take a drastic, strong stand against terrorism by… breaking all Internet encryption. Which not only is an unprecedented civil rights violation, but also doesn't even make sense (more surveillance wouldn't have stopped the last attacks); and not only it doesn't make any sense, but would also be impossible to do in any case. Oh and then the thing about DUP having ties with Ulster terrorism.

Am I getting this right? The Tory response to terrorist attacks is 1) attack the Internet, 2) ally with terrorism sympathizers?

Heading to a gaming convention tomorrow and hoping I have a great time. Thunderstorms are predicted this week, which is annoying because I'd like to leave the convention center and walk around...

...because Pokemon Go is having a Fire & Ice special to celebrate the solstice this week. I NEEDZ ME VULPIXES AND CYNDAQUILS AND A DAMN JYNX!

Also, I'm hoping this One Asshole Player doesn't cause problems. Although I'm ready to report his ass if he's harassing women again.

I will miss Capaldi. I will not miss Moffat.

Meanwhile, I already got all the fire types currently available in Go save for the Legendaries.
On the ice side, I just caught some Swinub for the first time, so I should get Piloswine soon (thank God for Pinap Berries). In addition, I should get Sneasel - which I'll be stockpiling for the eventual Gen IV update and thus, Weaville.

Outside that, not much interest in this event. (If they were reducing the required walk amounts for candies, however... [I'm walking my Gloom toward Belossom and I've only got 23 candies so far! My kingdom for more Oddish]).

What One Asshole Player do you speak of?

I've only watched up to Series 8 of Doctor Who, but I can't complain too much so far.

I still retain unreasonable and almost certain false hope that the new Doctor is in fact... a woman (scare chord).
And not Whoever The Hell It Was everyone was going on about a few months back.
(Again, it'd be even better if it was a woman of colour. But that's getting into Phillip J. Fry levels of false hope.)

Getting the sinking feeling that all the stuff about John Simm showing up is actually going to be a Red Herring.
That sort of thing Moffat likes to do where it's all "HA, you thought that was an important plot point but actually it's totally meaningless time wasting nonsense!"

Saw the new Pirates of the Caribbean at the weekend.
... not sure if it was necessarily better than the last one. There was much questions on the plot's logic (such as it was) on the way home.
Though there was chastisement for questioning the logic of a film wherein cursed men turn into fish people.
My major gripe was the music. You can tell it's someone different, because the tracks are just so unmemorable and different in tone.

... the hype machine for The Last Knight bit me.
Excited about it, but also concerned, because it looks like a hot, ludicrous mess of a film.
Also, all the damn trailers and TV spots are just... you could probably patch together all the major plot beats from them by now.

Also, excited for the upcoming Assassin's Creed.
Egypt! EGYPT!
Actually surprised it's coming out in October. Thought they'd said it wouldn't be coming out until March next year, but... hey, Egypt!
Gorgeous, gorgeous Egypt.

Ever since I saw one of my mother's cross-stitch patterns, I've been curious about the relationship between cross-stitch and videogame pixel art (I mean the actual pixel-based art of classic videogames, not the generic retroish visuals that pass for "pixel" these days). Recently I've decided to finally do something about my interest, and acquired some craft supplies. I present you my first ever stitch: a dwarf from the objectively best videogame in the history of electronic entertainment.

I found out that I can stitch listening to political talks by Žižek or Chomsky etc., and this activity is intensely enjoyable. I'm now waiting for a few more colors to arrive in order to construct a little room for my dwarf (it will be a clothier's workshop, naturally).

Actually a lot of millenials got energized around Sanders and then couldn't be bothered to vote for Hillary. I wonder if more of them would have engaged in the general election if... ah, well. It's unknowable. As a group (and I have two daughters on the younger end of this group) they don't seem to have much value for the art of compromise. (Counterpoint: My younger daughter, a college student, didn't get her absentee ballot in time so she and a friend made a 14-hour round trip drive so she could vote at home. She voted for Hillary, while holding her nose.)

Puerto Rico had a referendum on Sunday about the political status of Puerto Rico and I'm seeing a lot of Americans (and other foreigners) saying that PR wants statehood and... well, that's misinformation. There was only a 23% voter turnout for the referendum (about 518, 199) in an island of 3.5 million (with 2,260,804 registered). The "97%" that everyone's talking about that voted for statehood is actually 97% of the 23%--meaning that about 502,616 voted for statehood.

The boycott came about because the PNP (New Progressive Party, in English) announced the referendum and promoted it as such. However, they also got to make the ballots, which was written as the following: Statehood, Free Association/Independence, Stay As We Are. A variety of political parties in PR didn't like the "Free Association/Independence" option because it was lumping two different political ideals into one when they wanted them to be separate to actually see how many voted for Independence and how many for Free Association. The PNP refused to change the ballot, and also refused to wait for the courts to review the ballots. All other political parties then decided to boycott the referendum, but the PNP decided to just keep promoting it, wasting $6.9 million.

Now the governor (who is PNP) and other colleagues are going to Washington D.C. to talk to Congress about the referendum results, hoping to achieve statehood. Everyone else in PR is making fun of them because pro-statehood people about PR-as-a-state as if we would achieve a Utopia (the memes have abounded immensely). The rest of the Puerto Ricans know that the US federal government doesn't care about us and doesn't want us to be a state, so we aren't taking the referendum results seriously.

Point is, the referendum is a complete waste of time and foreign newspapers/news should really stop with the misinformation.

elf: Many Americans have all the virtues of civilized people (American virtues)
From: [personal profile] elf
A friend on another site pointed out that PR's voter turnout is usually 80% or more - this is especially important when talking to mainstream America, where voter turnout is 55% in a good year (and odd-year elections have abysmal participation), so 23% voting for a single referendum sounds small, but not pointless to consider.

The friend gave a nice breakdown of PR's political split about statehood, which seemed to boil down to: First, keep in mind that there are whackos in each of the major categories; ignore those. Next, we have the pro-state group, who think PR will be better off with votes in congress; the pro-commonwealth group, who think the current arrangement gives us more protections than we'd get from being "the 51st state"; and the "let's be our own country group" which is tiny because most people recognize that that's a huge swarm of financial difficulties with no safety net and also leaves PR vulnerable to forcible conquest, but the ideological case for it is (reasonably) sound, if impractical.

It was further mentioned (by someone else) that of course POTUS45 would love PR to become a state; he'd like that feather in his cap ("they had to change the flag because of me!"), and has no idea what statehood actually means.

As someone on the other coast who has no idea how Puerto Rican politics connect with US politics, my thoughts on statehood are "they should have it if they want it, and not if they don't." Too much of the US became states because white europeans invaded, declared they owned the land, and when they'd reached a certain population mass, declare they were now a state. I don't think statehood should be inflicted on PR, but if they want it, they should have it. (I have no idea how to measure "if they want it;" I'm aware that no single vote is likely to give a clear answer--it's obviously a major point of contention, and I don't think a 51% majority vote would be "truth.")

I saw the Mummy this weekend. Not perfect but better than the reviews made it look. Their biggest mistake was casting Tom Cruise. He can't play the rogue that well, their focus on him to the detriment of his love interest severely hurt the film's story, and considering his role in the greater Dark Universe, someone Egyptian if not at least middle eastern would have been been better optics, race-wise

Right, The Mummy wasn't that bad...It comes at night however...I don't know what was going on with that one.

I was delighted this week to finish production/broadcast of my 55th Doctor Who comedy-adventure serial-parody-puppet-show-on-the-radio. Nothing like having to remotely coordinate actors from across the UK, scriptwrite and produce shows every single week! :)

Listen in to past shows at: https://doctorwheasel.wordpress.com/

I started doing this last year as a lightweight alternative to the 'Doctor WHeasel' video-reviews I've been doing since 2007...and it's slightly spiraled into something more time consuming. Sheesh. Hope no one holds me to my promise of an 'all singing, all dancing' Christmas special.

Did any Jedi in the Jedi Council actually adhere to the "Attachments are forbidden" doctrine of the Jedi Code? From my memory (and including the old Star Wars Extended Universe):

•Perhaps the most well known, Anakin married Padmé
•Ahsoka fell in love with a podracer pilot
•Ki-Adi-Mundi had multiple wives
•Kit Fisto and Aayla Secura were secretly involved with each other
•Obi-Wan had a brief affair with the Mandalore
•Revan had Carth/Bastila/Juhani
•The Exile had Atton/The Disciple/The Handmaiden/Visas
•Starkiller's father probably had some sort of spouse or partner to be able to have a son
unless he was a single Father
•Starkiller came to grow attached to his pilot, Juno Eclipse, which became obsession when his
Clone rebelled against Darth Vader
•A Clone Trooper called Darmin fell in love, married and had a child with a Jedi called Etain.
•I imagine that the player avatar in The OldRepublic could have some sort of romantic
interest, seeing how Bioware usually puts the option in their games
•Depending on who you ask, Kanan and Hera could have some sort of romantic connection
•Luke married and had children, if I remember correctly

Luke decided that the rules needed a re-jig, and the whole "never have attachments, separate kids from their families by force" thing was utterly stupid and asking for trouble (that this would have meant trying to take Leia and Han's children may have had some influence there).

As for the rest of them... general rule seemed to be it was only illegal if someone pointed it out.

PBS will be airing a three-hour special on education, called School, Inc., narrated by Andrew Coulson. It looks to be nothing but a pro-Devos propaganda piece.

So Kotaku did a little review of the demo Capcom had up for the Story Mode of "Marvel vs Capcom Infinite". My favorite comment in the thread:

"If the story resembles fanfiction then the best way MvCI’s story mode would end is that after the story’s end credits it’s revealed that Kamala Khan had written it and finished uploading it online.

Guess that would explain why Ms. Marvel isn’t in the game."

If Capcom is listening, they need to, at the very least, make this a challenge mode ending.

That would work. But Kamala would have put in a lot more variety in the game's cast, especially on the Marvel Side.

E3: Cuphead got a release date. Anything else isn't really important to me.

I want to like Miles as a Spider-man I do, but every time I go on CBR option pages or Tumblr his fans give me more reasons to find him intolerable. All I hear is he's mix and that makes him perfect, that's not character that's just superficial. But most of all Morales lacks his own iconic arcs making mistakes, but I can't fault him for that since the poor schmuck is constantly dragged through several crossovers never being given time to build his own story.

He's just not that memorable to me compared to more well developed Spider family members of Peter Parker, Miguel O'Hara, Mayday Parker, and Kaine Parker I guess.

I get it POC is important, me I care more about character development skin color in my opinion should not define a character by any means only to make them distinct.

At least he isn't insufferable like the new Nova. Still, he's no Ms Marvel (better than the original) and Miguel is still the best mixed race Spider-Man
