More far-out DC Silver Age craziness from Brothers Joe Simon and Al Bare.

When last we saw Brother Power, the miraculously animate hippie mannequin, he had plummeted into San Francisco Bay and was presumed drowned. Fortunately, as Issue #2 opens, some kids fish him out and hang him up to dry. There's some pointless nonsense with some hooligans, in a glider done up like a WWI German fighter plane, harassing Brother Power and his new friends, then crashing. The kids take the revived Geek into town, where he gets a job in a grocery store and makes a good impression on someone with connections.

Fortunately for Brother Power, Lord Sliderule and his "trusties" don't have any water on them, so they're unable to do him any harm. When Acme learns of their malfeasance, he kicks them out and promotes Pow to factory head.

Sliderule, not to be outdone, sabotages a test flight and frames Brother Power for it. So once again our hero goes on the run, pursued by the military and the WWI glider hoodlums.

(Yes, that's Ronald Reagan, then Governor of California, in panel two of the last page.)

Despite the promise of a third issue, it was not to be. Years later, retired DC editor Carmine Infantino revealed that Superman editor Mort Weisinger really had a thing against hippies, and felt that Simon portrayed them too sympathetically (despite the comic having repeatedly depicted them as unmotivated layabouts). So Weisinger petitioned publisher Jack Leibowitz to can the series, just as the artwork for the third issue was ready for printing. Simon never revealed what was to have happened next in the story, nor what became of the art.

So poor Brother Power would have a bummer of a time over the next 21 years floating in space, until Neil Gaiman brought him back for Swamp Thing Annual #5, which we'll see in my next post.
