SECRET EMPIRE 4 may be our best-received issue to date, because a) Leinil Yu is a god, b) Hank Pym is the most interesting Marvel character. -- Nick Spencer

Hank Pym is the most interesting Marvel character.

Really? Hank? He might be interesting if it was actually clear what his current status quo is.

Yeah, Hank is super interesting ... just not THIS Hank.

I kind of dig this, actually. I always love a good underdog and anti-hero. Or maybe anti-villain. Something.

To be fair, that was brought up so Hank Pym could actually point out how unfair that description is.

I know Nick Spencer has said many controversial things but implying he supports beating women just because he wanted to write a character who did so once is a little much. Not to mention a little ironic given that his most controversial statement is about not punching someone who people thought deserved it (the whole punching a nazi business on Twitter).

I really liked Avengers Academy Hank and from what I saw Avengers AI Hank. I liked his relationship with Tigra and was curious what his relationship with William was. Hank and Janet work best as separate characters . From what I see Janet really benefits not having Hank around. Should there be mentioning of there history , yes....but it should not be used as the characters selling point.

I actually like when Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne are together, and miss when they were married (though that's largely because I'm saddened that comic book marriages seldom stay permanent).

It would be another Ralph and Sue Dibny every other month.

What's wrong with police marrying? Didn't Sue and Ralph have a relatively happy life together?

Okay, look.
Hydra Cap is still awful. This entire storyline has a lot of awful bits to it.
But this issue?
Fucking brilliant.
Because Pymtron -calls the Avengers out on their bullshit- from the past decade plus. He calls them on their hypocrisy, arrogance, in-fighting, hubris, and personal crap. Civil War 1, Civil War 2, House of M, Disassembled--all of it, in a way no one really has.
And when he's done? He gets called out on his bullshit, but we get a feel for how hypocritical everyone has been where he's concerned. Why does everyone else get infinite do-overs and chances, while Hank can't escape the stigma of one bad moment?

Several years from now, Steve will be Captain America the Pure again, and they'll still be calling Hank a wifebeater. Thor will be worthy, Tony will be sober, awake, and up to his usual stuff... and Hank will always be a wifebeater.

So yeah, seeing this "family dinner" scene? Pass the popcorn.

Though it's a shame Black Ant wasn't there for 3 generations of Ant-Man. :)

And it doesn't help that the infamous panel was as bad as it was because of a miscommunication between writer and artist. And even more than that, everyone always ignores that Hank was, at the time, in the middle of being heavily gaslighted and generally screwed over by a supervillain plot. Nope, let's just treat him like he's Ultimate Hank Pym, and tell him how horrible he is! Lather, rinse, repeat.

On another topic, Lienil Yu is not a god, and his art never fails to annoy me. At least this time, no ones eye sockets reach to the back of their skulls.

I loved seeing both sides told off! They're so smug and arrogant and hypocritical, it was fun to see Ultron throw it in their faces.

It sickens me to see the character assassination of Hank Pym over the years. As people have pointed out, there were mitigating circumstances surrounding that 'wife-beater' moment, including miscommunication between writer and artist. If Hank continued to hit Janet at every opportunity, he'd deserve the label, because wife-beaters hit, apologize, hit again, apologize again...did Hank ever hit Janet more than once? Once is bad, but if he was being gaslighted? It's like 'Hank the Wife-beater' is just easy shorthand for a complex moment, and believe me, I don't excuse batterers, but this seems more than that. *shrugs*

It doesn't help when Hank's ugly alternate version from Ultimates makes it a thousand times worse.

Long story short, Jim Shooter wanted a dramatic scene where Yellowjacket down his luck than Wasp would come in to try and comfort him but in comic dramatics Hank would raise his arms in the air in frustration "accidentally" being the key word hitting Wasp.

But Bob Hall misinterpreted the meaning and went with the infamous panel for a more dramatic effect

Holy crap Marvel just let Hank die, limbo is more preferable than secret empire and whatever the #$@% is this bullshit you got from that hack Remender.
I lost hope from Marvel improving Hank deciding to ignore all the character improvement he's had after such great titles as Academy and A.I. frankly limbo is heaven at this point.

Just stick to writing the adorable adventures of the new Wasp.

"Tony made his fortune making and selling weapons, which was bad."

Still confuses me. Who else could Tony or Howard Stark sell to other than the US military? Yes, the bad guys getting Stark weapons was the problem, but in the comics, it was never Tony's direct fault.

I think he was trying to use Tony Stark as a sort of 'Lord of War'-esque figure, where the titular character didn't really care about who got hurt as long as he made a tidy profit.

That reminds me of this What If comic in the 90s. The world gets terraformed, like Manhattan is covered with jungle brush and dinosaurs are running around in central park, and the Avengers have been reduced to a rescue team. Tony doesn't have technology anymore etc. Anyway, Frank Castle is on the team. But the world being terraformed sort of shifted his goals. He becomes kind of a pacifist (except for killing dinosaurs). Hawkeye or someone at one point says "You know the world's turned upside down when the Punisher is your voice of reason."

Given Marvel's penchant for making every What If happen in the mainstream universe now, I figure it's only a matter of time.
