A lot of us on here seem to be Doctor Who fans, and this is fairly big news so I decided to post it. With Peter Capaldi wrapping up as the Twelfth Doctor, it has been an interesting wait to see who would succeed him.

Well, just this morning it has been announced that the usual formula has been shaken up a bit with the casting of the very first female in the role of the Doctor, actress Jodie Whittaker, best known for appearing in Broadchurch and generally as a side character in a lot of British productions.

Sadly though not unexpectedly, there has been some discontent and vitrol online with fans and others unhappy with a with such a change to a fifty year-old show. Personally I'm cautiously optimistic, Whittaker is a solid actress and we've had twelve white dudes ranging from 30-60 years-old already.

In addition, anyone who follows the show will know that Time Lords can change genders through regeneration, so it's not as if the canon has been completely shifted around.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the new female Doctor?

I have faith in Whittaker. Chibnall still needs to prove it to me. I say this as someone who liked "Broadchurch", but that's a dark series admittedly.

Now then, how about a woman/POC as showrunner next...?

Give her a few years, and Sarah Dollard will be there. Just needs her own Jekyll or Broadchurch...

I loved her in Attack the Block.

AtB Alumni taking over geekdom these days! First John Boyega, now Whittaker!

I'm excited for this! I'm really interested in seeing how having a female doctor is different in many of the show's aspects from having a man. Also, I haven't seen Season 10 yet (no spoilers, please), but I'm hoping Bill joins her. Still got to finish season 9 and 10, first.

The thing is, none of the Doctor's principle character traits are anything to do with gender (very few character traits are... in fact I can't think of any unisex character traits at all).

The Doctor is always a combination of curiosity, compassion, courage and kindness, with varying degrees of humanity and alien-ness balancing (or unbalancing) their personality.

So it shouldn't make any difference at all that this one is a woman and I'll be annoyed if it particularly does.

Having only gotten into Doctor Who around the time of the 2005 relaunch, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the show, and was even more surprised to see that it had such a rich legacy dating back decades.

So naturally, when I heard that Jodie Whittaker was going to go up for the role, I didn't really know how I felt, since my experience has been a small sample size compared to what's come before. This isn't helped in that I haven't seen any of her previous works.

That being said, I am not opposed to this iteration of the Doctor. If we found that Peter Capaldi's Doctor regenerated into... say, Ewen McGregor as a centaur-like alien, then I might've flipped my lid. But this? I've got no complaints.

I'm offended that they're not going the usual route with Doctor casting.

I mean, I've actually SEEN Whittaker in something before DW.

Joking aside, I'm a little curious what route they'll be going with the companions.

Am I the only one who thinks that it's weird we have a female doctor before a non-white one? Personally, I was hoping for Paterson Joseph (who apparently auditioned for the role before, but lost out to Matt Smith).

As far as Whittaker goes, to borrow tigerkaya's catchphrase ... meh. I'm afraid that her entire body of work has passed me by. I did actually watch Broadchurch, but when she was announced as the new Doctor I had to check IMDB to remind myself what role she played. Which probably isn't a good sign.

Still, at least it's not Miranda Hart.

Oh, but my pretties, the Toxic Nerds are up in arms!

"Feminism!" they lament!

"Another victory for SJW's and political correctness!" they moan!

"What about Continuity?" they cry, forgetting that the mid 80's Dr. Who RPG (which had to be approved by the BBC) indicated the possibility for a gender switch upon regeneration.

That game was AWFUL, BTW.

Screw those guys, but people need a heads up on the mystifying misogyny a certain element of Dr. Who fandom is bringing to bear.

But I thought it was already widely accepted that gender swapping was possible. It seemed to be a thing that was possible but never openly entertained.

But I mean we HAD Missy this last season - plus before that we had 11 talking during the Neil Gaiman ep, about I think it was a Timelord Cosair who seemed to flip quite regularly.

I'll actually need to see her (and the new showrunner's writing/directing) in action before I have any actual opinions about her portrayal of the Doctor. But she'll get the same fair shot her predecessors got, and it's certainly a worthwhile casting choice to make.

It took 18 years, 9 months, and 13 days.

Of course, Missy is the real winner.

She managed to beat the Doctor to it, that cheater ;)

This news is NOT related in any way to comics scans, and as such is not appropriate for a Scans_Daily post, which is NOT a general purpose blog.

Such discussions should be saved for our Off-Topic Tuesday thread, when such subjects are fair game.

However, in this ONE instance, given the significance of the event, it will be allowed, but do NOT do this again.

Eh, every new Doctor gets complained about. The last two were too old and too young respectively IIRC.

That said, I'm still waiting for an "Olivia Colman plays every role" episode.

My only disappointment is that the first female Doctor is not also the first Ginger Doctor. Because she'd spend the entire New Face Episode delighted over finally being a redhead, while not noticing, or (even better) not caring about the gender shift. Because she focuses on what's really important :)

Not QUITE the same thing. ;)

Aside from the Last Airbender having four seasons with a male Avatar, and then he died and was succeeded in a different series by a female, being Avatar is an position that completely unrelated and different humans are born to fulfil, they're not the same person changing gender.

This having been the sort of thing I was hoping for since 2013, I am both surprised and elated.
(I mean, okay, I was hoping for a woman of colour, but hey! Next best thing.)

So elated, I'm willing to overlook any and all concerns about Chibnall for the time being.

Also, first blonde since the 80s.
Possibly a milestone for someone.
(But not ginger!!! Rrrggh...)

Not actually a Who fan, so I don't think this will change my viewings any. I do have friends my age who grew up with the show, and are what you'd call heavy fans, and so I do absorb stuff through pub osmosis. At our age, the Doctor was really the only cultural role-model they had as fairly geeky boys and young men who was an intellectual hero. Solving problems with his brain.

The rest were sportsmen, footballers and rugby mainly, and the sort of bulging muscle action men who solved problems through violence. There has been the occasional consulting detective show I guess. Nero Wolfe, who it was unwise to let the bullies know that you were following, I guess and occasional Sherlock Holmes.

This is all wrong! A 2,000 year old time traveling alien with two hearts and speaks Baby, Horse, and Dinosaur can't be female! It's completely unrealistic!

From: [personal profile] scorntx
Just imagine if they'd cast a female of colour!

Because obviously, a 2,000 year old time travelling alien with two hearts and numerous biological impossibilities who can speak baby, horse, dinosaur and cat couldn't possibly change both gender and ethnicity!

That would just utterly break plausibility entirely! T'would be the height of madness itself!

not discounting the sexist asshole man babies, and women (I've read the comments... they are there too...):

there really IS a cycle when it comes to regenerations. 13 is a woman, Capaldi was too old, Smith was too young and childlike, Tennant was not Eccelson, Eccelson was a weirdo in a leather jacket... by mid season people will love her.
