There's an old bit of dialogue from... something Fantastic Four related, which at the moment comes readily to mind.

"Can y' give me that again in Swahili?"
"You don't speak Swahili."
"And I don't understand what you just said, neither!"

How are those leaden-as-hell word balloons staying up in the air?

And the award for comic that everyone really wanted to be great and was deeply disappointed by goes to America.

It really is terrible. One of the clunkiest things I've read since Ann Nocenti on a tear. And at least Nocenti didn't always write that way.

Glad to know I'm not the only person who thinks Nocenti's writing is bad. I remember how clunky it read in the original Longshot series, and I quit buying Daredevil because of her.

I do genuinely like some of her work, and I think some of it is that her work aged very badly, but as soon as she gets hold of an Important Issue then all the characters fall by the wayside to act it out. And she can write characters perfectly well! Her Karen Page is great. It's very frustrating.

It reads like propaganda from the ILGA. Fathers, don't let your daughters read! ;p

God, Gabby Rivera is a terrible writer. I know it was co-written by Kelly Thompson but it feels like she got her marching orders from the editor. Unless her Hawkeye comic is written just as bad...

I read words - but there are so many my brain sort of just - didn't process them.

No one talks like this - this was physically painful to look at. Brevity is the soul of wit guys!

It's been a while but it reads like Jack Kerouac to me. Kate's dialogue is like Sal Paradise's narration.

Not sure whether that'd be a deliberate choice, with them driving around "on the road", or whether it's just me!

America Chavez can't fly last time I checked?

Flight has been part of America Chavez's powerset since she was introduced in Casey's Vengeance

She's flying brick who punches holes in the fabric of reality to travel between dimensions

I managed to read the entirety of the Young Avengers run without being aware she could fly, or have any actual idea as to what her powers were beyond kicking holes in reality and being somewhat snarky.

I'd put that on McKelvie's strengths as an artist lying more in design than in conveying action or combat.

But America flew in that series, off the top of my head she flew into the alternate dimension where she met kid Loki and beat him up, she flew into Laufey when she first met Billy and Teddy, her mothers were flying when they were introduced, and she flew into one of her mothers to re-kill her, and in the flashback to her origin she flew into the portal that cut her off from the Utopian Parallel and into the multiverse because she'd rather be a hero like her mothers.

But yeah she didn't receive much focus in that series until the absolute end so I can see why people who've only read her in that volume of Young Avengers would miss out on the fact she can fly. I've been following Ultimates which has had more traditional comic book fights, and due to the cosmic scale has America flying in space a lot so it doesn't really surprise me.

Easily one of my favorite panels in that run on YA is America flying back to into the action after rescuing Billy from being snatched, with him clinging to her like a living cape. Maybe that's why the idea that people who read it don't know she can fly is so bewildering to me, lol.

This is is what happens when you don't trust your artist to communicate the scene properly. With a braver writer, that speech balloon would contain the line "If they come back married, I swear", and nothing else.

It looks to me like those are narration captions that accidentally got turned into word balloons. I'm surprised no one else has suggested this yet.

I LIKE WHAT she is saying... it's just maybe it could have been broken up into either a few panels, or across a spread featuring their courtship....
