Josh really wasn't very bright, was he? Except when he exploded.

Yea - like - I'm trying to figure out in what world trying to get between the Joker and Harley would be a good idea. Like - dude - you are lucky you are alive right this moment in time, don't borrow any more trouble.

Trying to woo Harley away from the Joker was stupid enough, but believing Mr. J when he promised to show him how to make a "trick" explosive makes me wonder whether he had any functioning synapses in his brain.

By that point my brain just declared that Josh was sick of living anymore. There was no other explanation.

I've long theorized that most people have no idea how dangerous the Joker actually is, particularly his henchmen. They might hear all sorts of rumors, but it's likely that many consider them to be tall tales. After all, much of what he does is beyond belief, plus there's the whole "looking like a clown" thing. I'd guess most who haven't encountered him in the past tend to underestimate him.

That's kinda like the whole "Batman as an Urban Legend" theory. It seems fairly plausible in the short term but it falls apart when you remember the characters have been around for a while and this isn't a Year One story.

Of course the most implausible thing about the Joker has always been that some Gotham cop hasn't killed him while he was "resisting arrest"

I'd have to ask how many people have met the Joker and lived to tell the tale? Probably not very many, given his propensity to kill first, then kill later. While I'm guessing some of his exploits have made it into the newspapers, they're still difficult to believe, and I doubt that his photo is splashed all over the place.

I do have some theories as to why no one has ever killed the Joker, but I don't really have any evidence to back those theories up.

How many people would have to literally laugh themselves to death before it stops being a rumor

Yeah, the bodies the Joker leaves behind are NOT subtle.

The Joker would absolutely be tabloid fodder, a publicity-seeking egomaniacal, mass-murderer with a flair for showmanship? They'd eat up his "antics" with a spoon, and he'd play to that crowd.

I've said it before but the Joker trying to cover up his murder of Robin in "A Death in the Family" because he was worried about Batman's reaction, is one of the most nonsensical things ever, he'd have autographed the whole sorry affair precisely because it would get under Batman's skin.

There's an old Brave and the Bold story where the Penguin is seemingly murdered by the Joker and when Batman confronts Mr J he flatly denies it. Batman doesn't believe him until Joker points out "If I HAD been the one to snuff out old Pengy, I wouldn't be denying it... I'd be giving INTERVIEWS!"

I think that a big thing about the Joker is that he's a great smooth talker: most of the time, he knows what buttons to press as well as when and how to push them which is often why he ends up in leadeship positions or is ableto escape from harm (like when he talked Harley down from shooting him in Suicide Squad or him taking over the Phantom Zone's criminals in The LEGO Batman Movie). When this doesn't work, he gets confused and annoyed (like his reaction to Harley's behaviour above).

A lot of his henchmen seem just as terrified of him as anyone else is, though. I mean, Josh here literally pissed himself when the Joker was threatening him. He just went ahead and macked on Harley anyway.

I wonder whether Josh & Co. aren't just adrenaline junkies, trying to come face to face with the scariest thing in their world. Nice adrenaline junkies become EMTs or smokejumpers, naughty adrenaline junkies become supervillains' personal assistants. Something like that.
