'I have long pointed to the Green Lantern Corps as the definitive example of what I consider one of the chief problems with DC Comics -- what I have dubbed the "de-uniquing" of characters. Got a cool character like Superman? Well then, let's give the identical powers to a girl, a dog, a horse, a monkey, a cat, a few billion bottled Kryptonians... Think Batman is neat? Then you're gonna love it when we attach the same schtick to a woman, two girls, a dog, and even some people from different time periods -- oh, yeah, and his Dad! This kind of thinking really reached its zenith with the GLC. Think Hal Jordan is the bee's knees? Well -- there's, like, 3500 of him!' - John Byrne

-"Only one who was of the blood of the Waynes could be the next Batman"-
Reeking of DC's own "only blood defines you" garbage...

Of all the ways to merge Alan Scott's outfit and Kyle's own...
Why did Byrne decide to go with that one?

And even in a "Imaginary Story", the Guardians of the Universe are still utterly awful at their jobs.
Still, it's nice to have a constant sometimes.

That opening quote is confusing because well.... why did he bother making this comic then.

It's weird to complain about "de-uniquing" Hal Jordan, too; he's been part of a corps since his very first story. If you think Green Lantern needs to be unique, why introduce Hal at all instead of sticking with Alan?

Byrne's stated that just because the Corps exists doesn't mean DC had to go and actually have its other members showing up in guest appearances. Meaning he felt the latter decision was a mistake.

having them in the constant background would simply have been a huge waste of storytelling potential. As well as just weird plot fat. The corps that you hear about but never actually see much of, that'd be a strange thing to keep up for several decades.

So does the ponytail choose the Nightwing or does Nightwing choose the ponytail?

IIRC, this was part of the reason Kyle Rayner was the Only Green Lantern for a while. Were there any "Here's what happened to the rest of the universe without a Green Lantern Corps protecting it" stories?

IIRC, the Darkstars pretty seamlessly stepped into the role, including recruiting a lot of former GLs.

L.E.G.I.O.N. filled some of the gap, too. Neither it nor the Darkstars ever had the universe-spanning reach of the Corps, though.

Yeah, I'm not really agreeing with Byrnes logic in the quote there. Legacy is one of the bits about comics, and especially the DCU, that I enjoy so much. The silver age went well and truly overboard at times, and more modern comics can make the same mistakes, but things like the extended Bat-family, and Jon, Kara, Conner and John Henry Irons with Superman, and of course the Green Lantern Corps all help make a much larger universe. And more than that, that legacy often helps to show how the heroes have inspired others, or simply made the world better. Steel is a brilliant example of that, now I think about it.

As for the scans, Sinestro coming to Earth in a universe where Hal never took up the ring is interesting, although I'm really sorry Kyle got taken down (Did he put up more of a fight in the pages we don't see?). Sinny apparently killing the whole Corps is, as always, kind of silly. Overkill for the sake of drama/writer bias.

And the dialogue in the scene with B.J and Clark is so clumsy. It seems to be lacking in the kind of emotion you'd expect in a discussion like that. Although, I'll be honest, Byrnes dialogue usually hasn't aged well for me, so it might be a matter of personal opinion.

Indeed, I love a good legacy hero.

"The Ring can make me young again, honey. I can leave you to die and start hanging around with 14 year-old space girls, now! Do me a favor and don't let the airlock hit you on the ass on the way out."

That dialogue is so weird: it's like Hal isn't even thinking about the fact he'd either be leaving his wife to go into space (and maybe never see her again) or forcing her to tag along...because it's all about him.
