Parker ruined It? I dunno... it seems like you and Hydra did a pretty good job there by forcing his hand. :p

-"You spiteful man! You want let me have anything!"-
And the award for Most Tone Deaf Statement Ever Made (This Year category) goes to...

While it is good to see Peter just one-up Doc Ock like that, it's a shame he had to ruin his company like that.
Yeah, okay, some of it's intact and still in Aunt May's hands (and therefore safe forever), but... still, surely Peter could have had a better option than going scorched earth on it.

Peter has a "money is bad" hangup. It is actually rather simple:

"I wanted to use my powers to earn money. That led to Uncle Ben dying. Therefore, money is bad. Also, nearly all my villains like to steal money. So, money is bad."

Maybe it's just me, but I sure felt like Aunt May was implying to Spider-Man that she knows he's Peter when she tells him to tell Peter she's proud of him...

It's never just you.

But really, unless the Spider-Armor is modulating Peter's voice, it seems highly unlikely that Aunt May doesn't know.

(but if she did know, surely she'd just tell him... so... *shrug*. Maybe Slott isn't allowed to have Aunt May know?)

Honestly, I prefer the notion that Aunt May has pretty much always known, as they had it right before she died just before the Clone Saga. Especially since her characterization has long moved away from "doddering old biddy" to "sharp old lady."

Yeah, while bringing her back in place of the baby was annoying, undoing the confirmation that she always knew was unforgivable.

Peter is essentially her son. If she can't figure out he's Spider-Man then she's not worth having around.

And then, erasing her knowledge the second time around after the deal with Mephisto (why she wasn't then immediately run over by a bus, I don't know). JMS did a pretty good job with how he handled the reveal, even if it the first time 'round was better.

It does her a disservice as a character not to have known. MJ knew, and that's only because she saw it by accident. If the woman who raised him doesn't...

At least J. Jonah Jameson has a pretty good excuse.

"I present to you, J. Jonah Jameson, Spider-Man unmasked!"
"I hate to shatter your ego, Random Supervillain, but this isn't the first time I've seen Peter Parker in a Spider-Man costume."

The JMS issue where Aunt May finds him, then walks out and sits in the park and then just THINKS ABOUT IT for a while is great. Followed by her going to the library and re-reading everything with a new critical eye and then writing the Daily Bugle to call them on their bullshit is one of my favorite sequences in the run.

You can almost hear her thought process: "Peter has been LYING TO ME. But Peter is a good person. WHY would he lie to me, when Spiderman is a menace? He was badly hurt when I found him...why would he do any of it? He was sure he was going to die...I could hear it in his voice on the phone. He was protecting me. Maybe...maybe I've been wrong. But we're going to have a long talk about this."

And that talk was a good one, too.

Yeah. My preference is for her to have always known... but doing it that way hit a lot of depth too.

[personal profile] zachbeacon 2017-08-10 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, given the usual pattern, they won't confirm it until they want to either kill her off or rewrite Peter's history

After AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #400 (before "The Final Chapter), some fans speculated May figured it out in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #200. She pretty much stopped "That awful Spider-Man" after #200, at least.

... Okay, nicely done Evil Mister Rogers. Punched Ock right in his pitiful little ego.

I love it when Pete uses his brain and not just his spider-powers or indomitable will to win a fight.

I do hope he has some contingency set up... I mean, just saying "it's over" doesn't make the company go away overnight, so I hope he's got it set up to go into good hands, or even be able to recoup.

Didn't even realize his new outfit was armor, I just thought it was a more Tron-ish spider-suit.
