The trailer for Adam West's final performance as Batman is out, with William Shatner as Harvey Dent/Two-face in...

I confess that I was wondering how they were going to approach Two-Face's mental state in the movie, since Batman 66 wasn't really known for it's handling of mental illness, so here we have Harvey ebing "infected" by the accumulated evil of all the other villains. That's... one way of doing it.

And throwing in Hugo Strange and namechecking a certain Dr Quinzel too!

An out-of-left-field thought: Duela Dent, serial copycat, might be a suitable character to take that route.

"They are trying to overwhelm the machine with their evil! Shut it down!" Doesn't get more 1966 Batman than that. Heh.

Apparently, Clint Eastwood was considered for the role of Two-Face in the 1960s series, but the show was cancelled before the filming of his episode could begin. (The Wikipedia "Two-Face" article claims that the character was in the end considered too violent and gruesome for the show's tone, but citation needed. :) )

Well the script for the Two Face episode (which is different than the script for this cartoon) was done by Harlan Ellison, who, as you know, could sometimes go a bit overboard for the taste of Network executives.

That screenplay was adapted into a comic, but I've not read it.

I guess the idea of having a guy disfigured with acid was what set them off but the story itself is fairly tame and by the book; I.E. Two-Face decides whether or not to commit crimes based on the flip of a coin.

Well I think his characterization has always been less disfigurement equaling evil and more of a visual representation of his dueling sides.

It was in fact two years before BTAS that the modern portrayal of Dent with a pre-existing mental illness first appeared, in the Batman Annual story "The Eye of the Beholder."

Well it wasn't just being disfigured but being shunned by those around him as a result and being treated like a pariah.

Since around the time of BTAS (I was about to say "recently", but BTAS is now 25 years old!!), they have had him as someone with a pre-existing mental condition which found purchase due to the trauma of being disfigured.

See also BTAS's handling of Killer Croc; he's been alienated because of his deformity, but "Sideshow" establishes that when he discovers a community of people with similar experiences who are ready to love and accept him, he thinks only of how to take advantage of them.

Something other than just the acid driving Harvey over the edge makes sense story-wise. The Nu52 added a murdered wife.

"Acid-in-face and murdered wife make Harvey something something."
"...Go crazy?"

Spoilers for the TTG

The Telltale Batman game was kinda interesting because the Two Face personality formed without the the scarring at all*, he was battling with mental illness and the pressure for running for mayor along with feeling betrayed by Bruce, and Selina brought it out.

*I am not certain if he can be scarred in the game or not, there's a moment where you have the choice to protect Harvey or Catwoman, and I chose Harvey... he could potentially be scarred at that point, since I haven't done a second playthrough, but in my game he was not.

Heh...Clint Eastwood would then go on to inspire another disfigured DC character (I'm 99% sure it's officially stated that Jonah Hex is partially inspired by The Outlaw Josey Wales...and he's drawn looking like Eastwood a lot, anyway)...

Oh man, to have Clint Eastwood do Two-Face? that would be amazing.

I get it's supposed to be silly but I'm not crazy about that being Two-Face's origin.

The origin fits pretty well with the tone of '66 Batman. I like William Shatner's voice work in this, too.
