Here are two examples of two times Hal Jordan, having just gotten his Green Lantern ring for the first time, needed a mask in a hurry. One time he wanted one. The other time...

The first example is from "Emerald Dawn," the post-Crisis origin for Hal Jordan as a Green Lantern.

The second example is from "Secret Origin," the post-INFINITE CRISIS origin for Hal Jordan as a Green Lantern.

And both times it (apparantly) fooled Carol Ferris. Because comics.

Carol Ferris' quick realization in the "Green Lantern" movie is funny:

Carol: Hal? Oh, my G...! Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Hal!
Hal: How did you know it was me?
Carol: What do you mean? I've known you my whole life! I've seen you naked! You don't think I would recognize you because I can't see your cheekbones? What is this? Why is your skin green? Why are you glowing? What the hell is with that mask?
Hal: It came with the outfit. Cool, huh?

The Green Lantern animated series (that got cancelled for not having merchandise) said GLs do not usually hide their identities. Kilowog explains it to Rev.

Kilowog: That's Hal's hangup. That thing on his face, it's a mask. He wears it in case some Earthling climbs aboard the Interceptor, while we're in space mind you, and says "AH-HA! THE GREEN LANTERN ON MY PLANET IS HAL JORDAN! I'M TELLIN' EVERYONE!"
Hal: Ha ha. Talk to me when your planet invents paparazzi and the 24-hour news cycle.

And Guy Gardner once said:

Guy: By the way, good thing you got your tiny mask on, in case someone from this uninhabited alien planet recognizes you!

Meanwhile I've had multiple people report not identifying close friends due to glasses or similar. Facial recognition involves a lot of factors.

I used to work at a convenient store where I talked to a specific customer every single night. When I ran into her during the day at a grocery store, she didn't recognize me because I wore a different shirt.

I buy it! The brain uses *shortcuts* on this recognition stuff.

pretty much, there's people I see at work every single day. But if I were to meet them in a different context, away from the place I know them from, I would probably not recognize them.

There's a reason why I've gotten into the habit that when someone approaches me, and starts talking to me like they know me, that I just let them keep talking, in the hope they'll say something that'll tell me where I know them from.

It keeps people happier, than me just telling them 'who are you again?'

I once knew a girl in college. One day she ran into me outside of class and it took me a while to recognize her without her nose ring.

"Clark slouches, wears clothes two sizes too big, and raises his voice an octave."

When I was about four I realised that, in superhero genre fiction, domino masks ARE an infallible disguise, and have always just rolled with that.

For examples, see everyone from Robin to the Miraculous Ladybug.

It's right up there with the way hard boiled detectives can be knocked out repeatedly but never sustain brain damage from the multiple concussions.

My favorite though was the comment from Lois and Clark back in the day where Clark worries about being recognized and Ma Kent points out that as long as he's wearing a skintight suit, nobody's looking at his face...
