I remember similar publications back in the 80's and 90's. The art tended towards the wince-worthy by they seemed harmless enough.

And yet, I always come back to the exchange from an old Avengers comic (I think.. it might even have been in a fanfic, but it resonated with me)

Hero: Doctor Demonicus! How can you keep affording to make these giant monsters

Doc Demonicus: Oh, I produce boy bands.

Hero: You're in the music business?

Doc Demonicus: No, I'm a genetic engineer. i produce boy bands!

Seemed reasonable to me.

This reads like it was written on the night before the deadline and the author had to pad out the word count by going on random tangents about every little thought that crossed their mind.

That being said, I am interested in reading a thesis about how fuckin' barbershop quartets are the earliest incarnation of boy bands.

Four/five members, chosen to become a group because of their ability to do close harmony and generally be presented as clean cut and and inoffensive as possible?

Though the words of Giles from Buffy come to mind as he relates the night he spent babysitting Dawn; "We listened to aggressively cheerful music sung by people chosen for their ability to dance."

The foetal sequence reminds me of the opening of the terrible miniseries The Beatles Experience, which portrays Lennon as a bored infinite cosmic spirit who chooses to experience life:

Whereas we all know that the bored infinite cosmic spirit who chooses to experience life was David Bowie...

"Boyband" also implies a sense of being deliberately constructed and marketed as a unit by a music company, which the Beatles really weren't. The Monkees on the other hand. definitely were, and would be closer to the template.

I never knew their origin, man if they placed 3rd on x-factor, who actually won that year?!!?

It's funny thou, I see this lineup and the only two I recognize is the one that went solo, and the other that was in "Dunkirk". I kept asking myself, "Wait, that kid is in a singing group!?!?"
