We were going to take the bigness of Kirby and turn that into the intimacy of Mister Miracle’s life. Kirby used a metaphor for his time, written in the late ‘60s early ‘70s when the world was going utterly insane. We’re going to use it as a metaphor for our time, the late 2010s, when once again the world is going insane. -- Tom King

The story begins with Scott apparently attempting suicide. The rest of the issue is the fallout from that, even the ending, as Darkseid makes a move on New Genesis and Scott's still not right in the head. Barda has shown a lot of her softer side to cope with the married-person's-nightmare of a spouse's suicide attempt. But she ends up emulating Orion's tough-love tactics, and at least in the short term, it works.

But is this real? Was only the suicide attempt real, and is everything we're seeing after that Scott's hallucinations in what could be his final moments? Or was even the suicide attempt real? Such an attempt seems out of character for Scott, even allowing for different writers' interpretations... but planting the idea of suicide would be very in character for the early version of Darkseid. Darkseid used to spend less time punching Superman and more time strolling through funhouses designed to promote human despair.

Scott doesn't know what's going on any more than the rest of us. In addition to his uncertainty about the color of his wife's eyes, he spends some time with Oberon, who then vanishes, and Barda gently reminds him Oberon is dead of lung cancer.

PS: The old-school narration shows up at the start of the story too. It's really worth checking out.

This is just... amazing. I'll definitely have to pick this up. It reminds me a lot of Evangelion or Utena.

Highfive accepted, as Utena is clearly the best! (the new Blu-ray release is oh-so-tempting!)
