Champions #11

"The Champions are about confronting the injustices of the world, particularly the ones younger people face. As a Marvel comic, though, we can’t be too on the nose. It’s sort of disrespectful to do a story about Ferguson, call the city Ferguson, and act like the superheroes can have anything to do there, because that belittles the efforts of the real heroes in that town. If we take situations like that, though, and sort of tweak and fictionalize them a bit, it’s clear what we’re doing." - Mark Waid

But I thought NuHydra wasn't racist? Which is it, Marvel?

They claim to be not-racist but Patriot doesn't buy it (because he's not an idiot).

Spencer himself was arguing it on Twitter.

Yea, it'll *just happen* to end up killing disproportionate numbers of certain groups or such.

What does Hydra stand for? NuHydra, HydraOG, whatever. Like what is their mission statement? Does anyone know?

OG Hydra was "rich American businessmen wants to take over the world through spy movie style villain plots", basically a legally distinct Marvel version of SPECTRE. Since they've been retconned into being everything from 'Nazis under a different name' to 'ancient tentacle inhuman death cult' and every single villainous thing in-between. At the moment a lot of people think the MCU origin is the 'definitive' one and therefore they were always Nazis, but the fact is they've always been generic villains to stand in for whatever evil group the writers really want to use but can't.

To sum up, the only consistent mission statement Hydra has had over the years is "We want to rule the world and are willing to use violence to achieve that".

Funny thing is they were barely Nazis in the MCU. Even the Red Skull didn't actually share any of Hitler's views (saying his views were wrong) and ended up defecting to do his own thing.

A young man is walking through a small village one day and decides to stop by a bar and have a beer. He walks into a bar, and sees a grizzled old man, crying into his beer. Curious, the young man sits down and says, "Hey old timer, why the long face?"

The old man looks at him and points out the window, "See that dock out there? I built that dock with my own two hands, plank by plank, nail by nail, but do they call me McGregor the dockbuilder? No, no."

The old man continued, "And see that ship out there? I've been fishing these waters for my village for thirty-five years! But do they call me McGregor the fisherman? No, no."

The old man continued, "And see all the crops in the farms out there? I planted and have been farming those crops for my village for nearly 45 years! But do they call me McGregor the farmer? No, no."

The old man starts to cry again, "But you fuck one goat..."

Strictly speaking, most white supremacists don't think they are racist. "Racists" are people who hate people of other races. Most white supremacists don't actively hate them -- they just firmly believe in the natural inferiority of them. It's a popular conceit in their world. When you point out to white supremacists that it amounts to the same thing, the resulting denial fit can become quite impressive.

What happened to Eli Bradley?

Last seen in Children's Crusade, quit the Young Avengers, moved to the midwest, and the new Patroit says he was working in a voter registration effort last he checked.

I would have much preferred if they brought Eli back, rather than introducing a new Patriot.

Yeah, at least Eli had an established character. After Spencer is done with Sam Wilson Captain America I doubt anybody else is going to be writing these two characters ever again. Maybe have them show up in the background for large hero group shots, but more likely one of them is going to die in some ignoble fashion to spur some Event.

This new Patriot is going to be Falcon's sidekick in the new Falcon solo written by Rodney Barnes.

Eli sadly seems to be tangled up in some dumb legal thing between Marvel and one of their former writers that created one of Eli's family members.

...What? They're actually giving this new Falcon a solo series? Or are they giving Sam Wilson his own series?

It's going to be Sam going back to being Falcon and getting a new solo.

Oh, I'd wondered if there was some behind-the-scenes reason for Eli's vanishing.

As far as I know that rumor about it being legal issues is just that a rumor. There does not seem to be a signal article anywhere on the net supporting it that can be found.

All we know is that Marvel is not allowing Eli or any of his family to be used.
