Len Wein, Wolverine Co-Creator and ‘X-Men’ Reviver, Dies at 69

Len Wein, the influential comics writer who co-created Marvel’s Wolverine and DC’s Swamp Thing, and who helped revive the “X-Men” series in the 1970s, has died, his friends and industry colleagues said Sunday. He was 69.

The cause of death was not immediately known, but since March, his Twitter feed has detailed several health issues, including a spinal surgery and an abscess on his heel bone. His most recent surgery was Thursday, according to his feed, which included jokes wishing Wein had Wolverine’s quick-healing power.

Wein introduced Wolverine with artists John Romita Sr. and Herb Trimpe. The Canadian mutant debuted in “The Incredible Hulk” number 181.

I had the good fortune to meet Len Wein a few years ago. A very friendly, gracious man. Talked about how the SSoV team up is one of the first comics I can remember reading, and how sad I was that no one ever picked up on doing anything with the two GA's and Speedy's the way people had with the GL's or Flashes.

I asked him, though, how it felt to have created so many characters like Wolverine and Swamp Thing that were so better known for what they became under others' pens.

He said he was just grateful to have been part of the process and to have created something that made people happy. That's class.

Sad news indeed. Not only did he co-create a number of memorable characters, most notably Swamp Thing and Wolverine; he also, in his capacity as editor, wooed Alan Moore to DC and thus gave him his first exposure to the American comics market.

He's also the guy who, as editor, stated "Cripple the bitch", so I have very mixed feelings there.

To be fair to Wein, we don't know if that phrase is something he actually said - IIRC, it's coming second-hand from Moore at least a decade or two after the fact.

I'm not saying he did or didn't say it, but if I was sitting on a jury and this was a court case, I'd need more evidence before finding him guilty.

And even if he did... that's one, single strike on his record. It's not as though Wein had a public, longtime, unrepentant pattern of spouting misogyny, like, say, a certain Marvel covers artist. Or the current POTUS.

We can choose to let an isolated, private, and possibly not accurately-recalled statement tarnish Wein's legacy; that is certainly our prerogative.

Or we can choose to look at the big picture and instead celebrate his overwhelmingly positive contributions to the comics industry, and his general mensch-like behaviour.

Mod Note!

There is a time and a place for such discussions, I would strongly suggest suggest that an In Memoriam post is not one of them.

Depending of your point of view, that means he either did Moore a favor or the worst thing that could happen to Moore's career.

A shame that he passed. I think it's good to remember him as the co creator of Wolverine and Swamp Thing, that's cool.

I vaguely remember that Len Wein and Dave Cockrum thought Colossus would be the "break out" character of the All-New X-Men. It was why his costume was red and blue. Anyone confirm or deny that was the case?

Why would red and blue mean he was going to be a break-out? Thunderbird wore red and blue and look what happened to him. (Okay, he was intended to die all along, but still)

Red and blue being Superman's colors. Now I'm *really* wondering if I'm remembering this right.

It's not like he was entirely wrong- Colossus is one-of the multiple characters there that hit it big.

He's been enduring, and has an immediately recognisable, visual hook that is good for cameos, but I'm not sure I'd say he's hit if big as a character in his own right. He's never even had a mini-series of his own, has he?

Colossus: Bloodline. Granted that he's more of a team member than a solo act.

Any stories on him and Storm?

In what sense do you mean?

Storm's genesis is usually more ascribed to Dave Cockrum, who combined two different characters he's intended for one of this Legion spin-off teams, the powers of "Tempest", a weather controller (Who was male) and the looks of "Black Cat", a feline metamorph, to create Storm (who even retained the catslit eyes.

Well, headlines are attributing him to co-creating Storm. I was just wondering what he contributed and if he wrote any stories for her

Since he wrote the first appearance of "The All New All Different X-Men" in Giant SizedX-Men #1, he has co-creator credit for Storm, Colossus and Nightcrawler with Cockrum. He'd already created Wolverine for the Hulk story he debuted in some time before.
