Marvel announced the official return of adult Jean Grey in PHOENIX RESURRECTION, with a story by newly exclusive writer Matthew Rosenberg (Secret Warriors, Punisher) and art by Leinil Yu (Secret Empire). The five-issue epic will also include five artists taking on Jean Grey throughout the run, as well as Phoenix Variant covers that will begin in December.

“Matt came to us with a really interesting and unique approach to bringing Jean back,” said senior editor Mark Paniccia. “It’s not what we expected, and plays to Matt’s biggest strengths as a storyteller. This is very cool mystery building to a mind-warping climax. And it has plenty of what you’d expect from an X-MEN epic of this magnitude. Action, romance, sacrifice, lots of X-Men and five great artists.”

“This is just the beginning,” teased Paniccia. “Something this big will leave quite a footprint on the Marvel Universe. Jean will have a startling new role after this, and you’re left wondering, how will the rest of the X-Men respond? What will happen to young Jean Grey?”

PHOENIX RESURRECTION hits comic shops December 27th.

okay. let's start the bets: how long before she is dead again? I am going with "she was dead all along" reveal at the end.

I believe after many retcons and explaining that Phoenix and Jean were not the same person, she has only died once. When Magneto killed her/Phoenx (who were the same at that point) in Morrison's run.

But I also haven't been following Marvel canon for like 15 years.

Well, I am of the opinion that, for a death to count what matters is what was said at the moment of the death, not what a later writer thinks happened

Even so, it would've only happened twice then.

The joke is that happened more than once at all

I was excited right up until the word "Phoenix" showed up.
(And given how the writer did with Secret Warriors, they're not an inspiring choice either.)

If this is how Jean comes back, I don't want it.

Also, can writers at Marvel just... I dunno, actually read the damn Dark Phoenix Saga?
Either that or bludgeon them over the head with it.
Hell, even glance at the Wikipedia article, if that's what it takes.

Wow. I have wanted this to happen for a long time but without a real Scott, Logan or Professor X around it just seems dumb.

Though those very circumstances might be just what it takes to make it an interesting storyline.

Honestly, I think the only reason this is happening now is because Scott isn't around, so they can sidestep the 'is he with Jean or Emma, will he and Jean get a divorce' etc etc

No, the other what's-her-name, as opposed to the first what's-her-name, the second what's-her-name, and the what's-his-name.

Kind of excited, I guess. Rosenberg is a writer I think could do this right. I have the sinking feeling the Shi'ar are going be jerks again and try to destroy her.
My main hope is that they're bringing Jean back as a person and not as the Phoenix entity. Also, hoping her return could potentially bring some new development with her.

Given that the Shi'ar invaded Earth and summarily executed every member of the extended Summer's bloodline (including children and the elderly) except for Rachel, I suspect that some serious payback might be in the offing, or should at least be addressed.

December eh? I bet it gets stretched over to the summer event that Marvel said they weren't doing.

Also, I wonder if this means Marvel is no longer doing the X-embargo, or they figured they'll profit from it regardless. X-Men: Dark Phoenix's release date is November 2018 I think.

I don't think the apparent X-Men embargo ever really applied to the comics? You could cite that incident with the Terrigen Mists, but that was mainly setup for Inhumans vs. X-Men.

When it comes to Jean Grey, I wonder how much is "She's an interesting character" and how much is "We all hate Jim Shooter and everything he did has to be reversed and/or crushed."

Is hatred towards Jim Shooter really a thing Marvel creators do? It's been established he was strict. Are creators reversing his story edicts out of revenge? I don't know.

"Is hatred towards Jim Shooter really a thing Marvel creators do? It's been established he was strict. Are creators reversing his story edicts out of revenge? I don't know."

Certainly SOME creators really hated him. Others really loved him. Shooter rarely gets some of the credit he deserves for putting Marvel's house in shape. "Marvel: The Untold Story" details a lot of Shooter's time and indicates that yes, some of his edicts were aribtrary and yes, he was authoritarian. But it also details that he advocated for creators' rights in a way editorial never had before and more importantly, he got Marvel shipping titles on time again and making a profit. His first month on the job, almost HALF of their comics didn't ship on time (some as much as four months late). He hired as many people as he fired. He'd spent a few years working his way up as a proofreader and copy editor. A lot of classic things happened under his tenure. But he was also very much a company man (despite having left DC for chafing under their tight controls).

He's a complicated guy with a complicated legacy...but if I got anything out the Marvel histories, it's that a lot of artists were more irritated that Shooter signaled that the party was over...and that he was often force to be Stan Lee's hatchet man. Not to say he wasn't a jerk...but that book makes it clear there were a lot of hurt feelings all around.

I suppose Ororo and Peter's reactions to her return could be halfway interesting and poignant. They'll probably never feature Hank or Bobby's response outside crowd scenes, right?

I think I feel about Jean Grey the way I do about the Time Lords, I expected to miss them more when I found out they were dead, but I really didn't, and I am for some reason irked at bringing her back, so soon after turning Emma evil again.

But the Time Lords are boring. All they do is show up, talk bollocks and just generally eat up screen time.

As opposed to Jean, a versatile and interesting character with many interesting stories to her name, such as...
... err...
... such as...
... hold on, I'm sure there's one Jean story that has stood the test of time... which hasn't involved either the Phoenix, or the love triangle...

I say it often, but he editors, writers and readers only care about stories and characters from the past, they should stop publishing new stuff.
Just publish some essentials, like a collection of the best Colossus stories, best Rogue stories, and so on.

Not all readers only care for stories and characters of the past. The problem is that, since around the nineties, the big two began trying to cater specifically to those who only care about those older stories and characters, which has been a source of frustration for many, MANY writers who have seen their stuf undone over the years.

I'm honestly surprised she's had the tenacity to stay dead this long. She's been dead since the end of Grant Morrison's run in 2004.
