I love that this series seems to exist partly to more fully do the " bent versions of characters from the mainline show up in the side imprint " thing that happened here and there in newuniversal.

(Terra Obscura said " In a world of bastards, the conventional superheroes would be dead. "

This says " In a world of bastards, the conventional superheroes would be wrong. ")

Well, that's Wildstorm all over, isn't it? Conventional heroes are all chumps. -Real- superheroes are willing to get their hands dirty to make the world a better place, up to and including murder on a small scale, mass murder, and manipulating the governments of sovereign nations.

What's makes the Authority heroes instead of villains? Because, for some reason, even though they are willing to make decisions for all mankind and kill who they feel needs killing at will, with no repercussions, they never turn to selfish ends.

And -that- my friends, is every inch as pie-in-the-sky idealism as the existence of conventional superheroes. People who are above the law, who freaking call themselves "The Authority" never turn selfish. Are never cruel to any but their enemies. They are every inch as moral as heroes who refrain from killing and acts of world domination.

But...killing solves everything

Isn't killing whoever you think needs killing fairly selfish in and of itself ? I mean even if we accept that you're judgement is correct, are you the one who most deserves to kill them ? In most of these universes there's fates worse than death too, are you robbing someone of the opportunity to do that instead ?

(Also the same argument can be extended to making decisions for all man kind but that argument is a) trivial and b) hardly as controversial as kill / not kill in comics so I'm skipping it)

You are right. Taking on the moral authority to kill at will and bully sovereign nations into compliance with your agenda is selfish.

Thus, one wonders why they didn't take it the rest of the way and just overtly take over the world and kill anyone who opposed them? It's only a half a step forward from the Authority's status quo.

It doesn't though, at least not from a moral discussion PoV. This isn't a conventional Oliver Queen, it's an Oliver Queen who is a bastard. It's not demonstrating that Oliver Queen is wrong because . . , it's presenting a wrong Oliver Queen.

Would Batman be wrong if he devoted his life to recreating scenes of his parents mugging and murdering the 'mugger' ? Sure. But it doesn't really say anything about convention Batman because that's not what Batman does.

Yes, that's the definition of wrong I was using.
