Whenever you see artists re-imagining Usagi Yojimbo, one of their favourite choices to include in their drawings are the tokagé lizards. In a world in which pretty much everyone is an anthropomorphic animal, those lizards fill up most of the possible niches (pets, food, predators).

Usagi did have, for a brief time, a tokagé pet, Spot. This is the story of how they met.

A stray lizard is surviving from scraps until he enters a restaurant, much to the owner's discontent. He chases the poor animal away to a watchtower. Usagi arrives in town and sees the commotion.

When he reaches the top of the tower, he offers the lizard a rice ball. It starts to snow, and Usagi tries to convince the lizard to trust him in order to survive.

Well, he did cut it out.

In 2004, when Usagi turned 30, various artists banded together to give each their interpretation of the Usagi Verse in "The Sakai Project". Funds went to help Stan's then wife, Sharon Sakai (who unfortunately passed away in 2014) cover the costs of her medical bills. Several of those artists portrayed Usagi with "Spot", as he christened this lizard. Denver Brubaker went as far as recreating this cover.

Zato-Ino, the blind swordspig (I should really profile him someday), eventually became Spot's owner not too long after this story.
