A funny, bittersweet and touching story of shifting father-son / father-daughter dynamics.

From "They Fixed Homer's Brain!", Simpsons Comics #27 (Dec. 1996). Story by Doug Tuber and Tim Maile. Art by Stephanie Gladden, Tim Harkins and Tim Bavington (no, I have no idea what's up with all the Tims either). 6.67 of 22 pages.

Homer accidentally breaks Lisa's saxophone while horsing around with Bart, and now must buy her a replacement. He learns to his dismay that a good sax plus necessary accessories costs around $500. Fortunately, Professor Frink is offering precisely that amount for participation in a Springfield U. study which is looking specifically for stupid people. Frink gives Homer an experimental enzyme pill which will make him a genius for seven days, after which a brain operation will make it permanent.

The next day, the enzyme begins to take effect (in the usual, fictional "increased intelligence automatically bestows increased knowledge" way). While Marge is unsure how this will affect their relationship, Lisa is thrilled. Even Bart, who now has someone to do his homework for him, is happy. At first.

Over the next few days, Homer and Lisa bond over his new passion for science and the fine arts.

The next day, the family drops by the university so Homer can have his brain surgery. Marge, in addition to missing the old, Hagar the Horrible-reading Homie, is worried what Bart will get up to now his father's no longer paying attention to him. Her fear is confirmed when Bart bungie-jumps off a campus building.

I love this story because it shows how deeply Homer and Lisa care for each other, each willing to sacrifice in order to make each other, and the whole family, happy.

Note to fellow Simpsons geeks: although this story has a similar plot to the Season 12 episode HOMR, it was published well before that season was produced. I prefer this take on it myself.
