In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

Well, the New Year is here and though traditionally the Christmas season doesn't end until the Epiphany on 6th January, in many places the tinsel is down and Valentines chocolate ads are already appearing.

Anti-Government protests in Iran over the past few days have left over 20 people dead

The current and former Presidents of the US, Tweeted for the New Year... I leave it to your imagination which one posted a positive, uplifting message of inspiration, and which one... didn't.

I'm going to leave this post short and sweet because a google through the headlines depressed the hell out of me and why would I share THAT?

So, chat away!

1)The King of Fighters is getting a new manga.

The Street Fighter series has been blessed with UDON comics, which somehow (probably using witchcraft) managed to turn the mess of the story of the games into a coherent plot, and characterization so strong they even managed to make me love Ryu (the “Sakura teaches Ryu to chat on the internet” page is solid gold).

Yet, despite the fact that KoF is just as good a series of videogames, and with a much more interesting story, so far most of its manga/comic products have been either just very barely decent or outright terrible. The only ones I’ve actually liked are Andy Seto’s KoF Zillion and The King of Fighters Kyo, and even then I’d call them fun and enjoyable but not exactly amazing.

Given that I’m a *HUGE* KoF fan, I always hoped that would change. I know nothing about this upcoming manga other than the fact that I like the art, but I really hope it’s good.

2)Just beat FFXIII Lightning Returns.

I find the FFXIII trilogy to be very frustrating, because I like the main hero characters a lot*, but I friggin’ hate the story. Wasn’t all that fond of the story in XIII to begin with, and then it went downhill in the sequels. And the villains and the secondary characters can be pretty atrocious.

*especially Sazh and Snow. Hell, Sazh is one of my favourite characters in the entire FF franchise. A pragmatic yet dorky 40-year-old civilian who points out the ridiculousness of JRPG tropes while still playing along with them in the best Indulging Single Dad way? Yes please! He and Cid Highwind should totally meet in Dissidia/Kingdom Hearts.

Would you reccommend the UDON comics? I’ve wanted to get into them, but I’m not sure if I should.

I greatly enjoyed most of the main series (I stopped keeping up with it around the time it got into the SFIII story and replaced the protagonists, as I didn't really care for those characters), as well as the "Legends" spin-offs starring Chun Li, Sakura and Ibuki. They generally have their own individual mood (the main story is a mix of comedy and drama, the Sakura one is all comedy, the Chun Li is mostly serious drama), so you might much prefer one over the others.

A long time ago, back when this community was still in LiveJournal, people posted a ton of scans of the series, but those posts are all gone now. Here in Dreamwidth there are only a few posts, and all but one of them were screwed over when photobucket changed their settings and deleted the pictures.

Here is the lone survivor :)

Reminder that the Legends: Sakura spin-off is by far the most comedic of the UDON comics, so whether you like it or not, it might not necessarily reflect on the rest of the series.

Today is an orientation lunch for my new job, with the training starting tomorrow.

Also today, first thing in the morning city inspectors came by to look at my apartment. (Annual city thing, looks like my apartment passed.)

Yesterday, I posted my first review of the year on my blog, The Birth of Kitaro: http://www.skjam.com/2018/01/01/manga-review-the-birth-of-kitaro/

The previous entry is a top ten list thing for 2017, if any of you were wondering what was popular.

I was under no illusions that the new year would magically make things better* but 2018 is not off to a great start.

*2017 was even worse than 2016.

I hope you all had a really nice holiday time!
Here's my prediction for 2018: We will find evidence of life in outer space. We're discovering all these planets which look habitable, NASA found a strange rock they thought could have been crafted on another world, we've had so many near-misses that I genuinely think 2018 could be the year something big happens.

There's a neat documentary on Netflix, I think it's called "Undisclosed." It offers pretty compelling testimony that the truth IS out there...but there are very powerful and ruthless people who would do anything to keep it covered up...

Trying to finish Jessica Jones. Similar to Netflix’s Daredevil in that while it’s well made it’s mainly my affection for the source material and the main villain that keeps me going.

I really wish they could find ways to better integrate these into the MCU if only in small ways. Chris Hemsworth likes doing these Thor skits, he’d probably agree to a quick cameo where he rescues Jessica from drowning and she vomits all over him.

I'm curious what you'll make of Luke Cage. The first and second half almost felt like different shows.

Just watched Punisher of the weekend. It solidified my belief that these shows should not have a fixed episode count. They were in the middle of telling one story and then they dropped everything for an hour to focus on an unnecessary B plot.

I guess you could argue Jessica Jones did the same with Nuke.

I’m probably just going to stick with the Matt/Jessica stuff for now given how long it’s taking me.

It’s kind of funny, it took me two days to binge Stranger Things season 2 but it took me weeks to find time to finish DD.

Even if the man does, his contract might not... agents these days tend to be very persnickety about not letting their clients get taken for granted by the company.

I finished making my Marvel comics skirt on Sunday. I had accidentally cut one of the pieces on the wrong side of the fabric and needed to find the other older yard of Marvel print I had in my stash. It worked fine - it had the same Spider-man and Thor covers...but the older print also had X-men and Wolverine. Wonder if the mutants will reappear at the fabric store now.

Well, it finally happened. They finally made a LEGO Star Wars set with Old Luke.
Very happy about that.

... still not actually sure on my feelings about The Last Jedi itself.
I didn't hate it, certainly, but beyond that, I've no idea.
Well, aside fae the bit with Leia. (the later bit, not the space bit)
Though I admit I was kind of distracted by being in hideous tooth-related pain from the middle onwards. Really distracting (fortunately, it turned out to be just sympathetic nerve pain because of a sinus thing, and the dentist said everything was fine, teeth-wise. Always good to know.)

Listening to the New Year's Dead Ringers special, and freaking heck, it's hard to laugh when the subject matter is Britain being nuked, and the continuity announcer afterwards has to reassure everyone that, no, neither the Fat Orange One or David Davis have caused the end of Life As We Know It.

Spent much of the last week playing Assassin's Creed: Origins.
Enjoyed it. A definite step-up, but...
The lack of a database is a shame. It's nice knowing the history of places you're turning into a blood-bath.
And the sheer number of enemy forts got a bit wearing.
(also the continuing and kind of alarming habit the series has of ignoring Jewish history and people is... yeah...)
But the sheer size and number of things to do is pretty good.

Still think Doctor Who should've gone with Capaldi regenerating in his last episode, and let Whittaker have the Christmas special.
Because what we got...

I watched TLJ this week. It was alright but a lot of the stuff outside the main Rey/Luke/Kylo story felt like filler.

"Still think Doctor Who should've gone with Capaldi regenerating in his last episode, and let Whittaker have the Christmas special."

Originally Capaldi was going to regenerate at the end of season 10, but it turned out they didn't want to introduce Whittaker in the Christmas special. On top of that, the BBC was making noise about cutting down on various Christmas specials among its productions, so not doing it this year would have left it almost certain we wouldn't get any in the near future.

I'm so glad to hear that! :D

I really loved the original movie, and decided that I was most definitely going to watch the remake the moment the first teaser poster came out. But every single person in my group of friends has refused to come with me because they insisted that the movie would suck (I asked them how exactly they can be so sure about that, they said they "can just tell"), so I'm going to go watch it alone next week. But since they all kept telling me it would be terrible, I was starting to get worried.

I’vs never seen or read the original film and book, but, from what I’ve heard, Welcome to the Jungle isn’t really connected to them outside of a few easter eggs and references.

Young Justice season 3, has a release date of late December 2018. Possible this might be when DC's Digital Streaming Service (DCDSS? I look forward to it getting a proper name) comes out.

Hear, hear! I despair at the enthusiasm and speed at which some people take their decorations down. The Yuletide lasts until 12th Night, and I don't care if I'm the last person in the cul-de-sac to take down my decorations.
