Man, it's weird to read Rogue say "I" instead of "Ah".

I think moving away from the dubious phonetic accents can only be a good thing. I say that as someone whose country always gets laden with the absolute worst phonetic accents, of course.

I'd take that over whatever the hell they make the "street wise or sassy Black characters" say. Luke Cage is still calling people "Sucka" in 2018...because that's how all Black people (particularly from NY) speak, right? 😧

I think it's more that at this point, that's how Luke Cage speaks, Sweet Christmas!

I think there's a difference between having a catchphrase ("Sweet Christmas!", "Holy Moly!", "Great Krypton!") and having a badly rendered phonetic accent.

eh over time accents tend to soften depending on the company they keep. I would love to see an issue where some one points it out, or she gets angry and it comes back and everyone is like. Huh... there it is...

I've only ever found there are two situations where my original accent (rather than the softer one I generally use when speaking to people) kicks in; If I am very, very angry (which thankfully happens very rarely) or if I am very, very tired. The last time I moved house I was awake for over 24 hours getting things sorted out and I was more or less incomprehensibly Scottish by the end of it.

Ugh. This is why I hate fan-preferred couples.

Look, Rogue and Remy made sense when it was introduced twenty-five freaking years ago. For all her power and her battle experience, Rogue was still a romantic ingenue. And while Remy was and will ever be bad news, he's also the kind of smooth-talking charmer an ingenue might fall for. Their hook-up made sense.

But Rogue has grown a lot in the past twenty-five years (five-ish years comic time?), and Remy hasn't. She's moved on, and pairing her with Remy again makes no sense. But because comic fans liked the pairing, the writers concoct dumb scenarios to get them back together.

Ugh.

honestly a lot of Rogue's growing never worked for me, she never struck me as a leader type so I was never a fan of that growth. And none of her relationships were good

I liked AoA Rogue and Magneto. Granted, 616 Rogue doesn't have those memories, but it's a good example of how much better characters get when they don't need to regress in service of old fan-ships.

Kitty's relationship with Peter *is* toxic, but I wonder if that is anyone's fault. It's just the soap opera nature of relationships in the X-Men and most superhero comics. Or, if you are going to write about Kitty and Peter, you have to make it interesting. And "interesting" can mean "toxic."

As a brief aside perhaps, but if it goes any further than the situation required to resolve it, and move on it is to the strong detriment of both characters, denies them the chance to be more interesting couples with other people and can utterly derail them as characters.

You can't just have a toxic relationship in the background long term for two major characters or it ceases to be "soap opera" and becomes "misery porn".

(All that and I'm also incredibly tired of writers trying to make them a couple because that's what they remember growing up, when they broke up in something like 1985 and never hooked up again until Whedon's Astonishing X-Men)

If one excludes her gal-pal Rachel on the grounds of subtext doesn't count (Which is itself sort of iffy), Kitty's age probably precluded her having anything serious going on for a looooong time.

Then there was the whole fuss about Claremont de-aging her back to a point at which her having a sexual relationship was still illegal, especially AFTER Warren Ellis had chosen to write her as well over 18, and thus entirely old enough to have a sexual relationship if she wanted one.

Yeah, Kitty and Piotr is the other fan-favorite X-ship I can't stand, for the exact same reason as I said above. Kitty's moved on, Piotr hasn't. Their dating no longer makes any damn sense.

I really like Kelly Thompson as a creator, we wouldn't have had the Jem series without her as an example, and as such, I really do wish her every success.

Alas, this pairing is one I genuinely couldn't care less about, never have, and most likely, never will.

Gambit I have never seen the appeal of as a character. aside from a visually cool power manifestation and Rogue is a lot more interesting without him hanging around.

so, why did they break up?
I vaguely remember them having some issues over Remy's involvement in the Morlock thing. (and didn't Remy and Marrow have a thing for a bit?) but I thought they got back together and were as thick as thieves. (no pun intended)

Definitely buying this. Every friend I had growing up watched the 90's X-Men cartoon, and these two right here were the power couple to end all power couples. Gambit is always awesome, Rouge is awesome-er.

I'm of two minds.

I don't like Gambit and Rogue as a actual couple and I think the X-Men are way too forgiving of traitors like him.

On the other hand, these two going undercover as a fake couple (because Kitty is too insecure about the stability of her own relationship) is hilarious.
