The BATMAN #38 post got me thinking about the "idiot billionaire" facade Bruce Wayne puts on and if it is that effective. So here are some pages from BATMAN FAMILY #1 that explores the idea a bit.

This is from the 2002 miniseries BATMAN: FAMILY about Batman and Company vs. a group out to tear Gotham City apart by John Francis Moore. The twist to the series is that the Big Bad of the series was an "enemy" of Martha Wayne.

Was the "billionaire wastrel" idea the best Bruce could come up with so regular people wouldn't think he's a masked vigilante?

Here is a quote from [personal profile] magus_69:

I don't have a problem with the theory of it, but the execution has been terrible. It has been repeatedly shown that he was a very smart, very intense kid even before the Wayne murders, and people remember that sort of thing. Given Bruce's trauma, having him grow up into a hedonist makes sense given his immense privilege. Habitually acting like an idiot as a way to fuck with people is plausible, provided he is called on it from time to time. Having people who should know better accept the idiot act? No.

Say does anyone know when the idea of Bruce Wayne rich playboy act started? Like an obnoxious rich person. Because I think that might be something which came along quite a while after Batman's creation.

Yes ad no? I've been reading the Golden Age Batman omnibuses of late, and Bruce is definitely the idle rich guy in those, but not to the level of "rich idiot" that he'd hit peak levels of in the 90's and early 2000's.

1939, on the first story panel of Detective Comics 27, the first ever Batman story.

One of the primary influences on Batman was Baroness Orczy's "The Scarlet Pimpernel", where brainless fop Lord Percy Blakeney is actually a tactial genius, disguise expert and multi-disciplinary combatant, so this

Bruce Wayne is established as a disinterested, socialite from the very outset, Gordon thinks he's a nice enough chap, but from his POV, a very boring person.

It's only what that means in terms of the society and what the publishers would allow that's changed. So in 1939 Bruce Wayne would not have been allowed to have been shown dallying with "the supermodel du jour", but he could be a bored polo-playing socialite and leave it to anyone reading it what that might mean.

Really, just as his competence and paranoia hit peak levels in the 90's and 2000's, so to did the "rich idiot" levels of Bruce Wayne. It got to the point of way over the top exaggeration.

Should Bruce downplay his competence as Bruce Wayne to a certain extent? Sure. But that just means not pulling obscure trivia about clown operas out of thin air or knowing that a flower is from two specific square feet of the amazon. Not needing Alfred and Lucius to tie his shoes for him.

Batman has always had certain aspects about him exaggerated over time. Back in the Golden Age he was portrayed more as comfortably well off. Now he's tied with Luthor as the richest guy in the DCU.

Normally comfortably above Luthor, even. Thanks to inheriting more and the parts not under direct control being bigger. Lex Corp is more based around Lex personally and when he doesn’t pay attention it’s affected more.

Ha thanks for the scan! Alfred for the win "Perhaps he manages his time better than you, sir." Gold.

Re the idiot playboy, I always find it entirely unconvincing when it's taken too far (which they didn't in the animated series. He was shallow, but not as stupid as in maybe some comics (though I admit to a lack of knowledge of comics canon).
