"Her name is Valla. In life she was a fisherwoman. In death she is a vampire residing peacefully on the bottom of the ocean. When a mysterious dark plague descends upon her aquatic paradise, she must venture to the surface in search of answers. What she finds is a world headed towards an environmental collapse that will eventually wipe out her food supply. If Valla is to continue to have the blood she needs to survive, then she must stop the fossil fuel industries from destroying the planet—no matter the cost."

Ancient Vampire turned Eco-Warrior. I like the concept.

I remember hearing a bit about this on an NPR interview a few weeks (months?) ago. The artists insisted the T&A aspects was just to hook folks in, and that the series would deal with serious real world eco issue. The interviewer seemed... less than convinced.

Well, the proof there will most certainly be in the pudding. The problem with saying something like that is that, if you fail to make good on your claim, the tsunami of disapproval will be all the more potent.

That said, it is a vampire story. Vampire stories are inherently sexual. Lamenting sexuality in a vampire narrative is like bemoaning violence in a superhero comic: it is fundamentally tied to the genre.

For the lion's share of these scans, the sexuality is relatively tasteful (a bare bosom from behind as she displays herself (in a decidedly PG-13 way) for the online audience, a semi-transparent negligee', etc...) It isn't until her flashback that we stare to see nudity, and then, I thought the image of Valla, covered in blood, retreating into the dark of the sea was striking. Her diaphanous underwater gown is titillating, I suppose, but no more (and in many cases, rather a bit less) than many women in mainstream superhero designs.

That aside, I am with the NPR guy: Your T&A will lead to rich character development and a nuanced exploration of themes? I'll believe it when I see it.

Well, this sure is something that someone did, I guess.

I find the repeated requirements to push the T&A aspect while having convenient splashes of water, bubbles and camera angles (and in that one panel, just plain choosing not to draw them) to obscure her nipples. Cartoonish but graphic depictions of face-melting and decapitation, sure...but secondary sex characteristics? No way.

This isn't bad, just...kind of odd, IMHO. It's decently drawn, the writing is fine, I guess...something just seems off about it to me.

An amusing and tragic symptom of our culture's unease with sexuality but comfort with violence is that more acts of sexual assault are portrayed each year on broadcast television than acts of consensual sex.

People can do all sorts of violence to each other, but a bare bottom or a nipple, even in a non-sexual context? No dice.

And a penis? Even in film, -very- rarely, and then, only flaccid. Erections are the exclusive purview of the X rating.

And yet, on the internet we are in a golden age of pornography.

Go figure.
